My name is Lawrence John Skiddy Hurley. I am searching for information about Lawrence John Skiddy (born ~1839, sometimes called Lewis) and his wife, Ellen Brown, who emigrated from Ireland to Vermont, USA in approximately 1860. A brother, Thomas Skiddy, is believed to have emigrated to Australia at approximately the same time.
After serving in the 2nd Vermont Infantry during the American War Between the States, Mr. Skiddy settled first in Rutland, Vermont and subsequently in Glens Fall, New York, where he worked as a tailor.
Thank you for any assistance you may provide.

Hi
Thank you for your message.
Do you know much about his emigration? The dates or who he may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information.
If you haven't already - You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/ for further information.
Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at ). www.failteromhat.com
Some additional sites/resources which may be helpful to you are:
Cork Genealogy information: http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/genealogy/
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Lawrence:
I checked the 1852 Griffiths Valutation head of household listing for Monanimy parish and there was one Skiddy entry-- a Mary in Ballyduff townland.
The 1825 Tithe Applotment listing for Monanimy parish listed a Thomas Skiddy for Carrigacunna townland

If your family was Church of Ireland then the Mormon Church has microfilmed records back to 1812. You can order the film online at www.familysearch.org and have the film sent to a local Family History Center hopefully near you where you can view the film.
