I am searching for my great grandfather, Patrick Sullivan.  I do not have any information on him prior to his marriage in Newfoundland.   He married Anastasia (Anne) Malone on November 4, 1845 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.   A search in the archives in Newfoundland did not find any birth records for him.  I do know that on his son's marriage certificate he was listed as a Sea Captain, but that is all the information I have.  G\oing by the date of his marriage, he would have been born probaby in the very early 1800's.

Anastasia Malone wa born on January 2, 1825 in St. John;'s Newfoundland at the Roman Catholic Parish.  Her parents were Michael Malone and Catherine Clarke.   I do not know if they were born in Newfoundland or Ireland.

My research interests are to find the birth and emigration of Patrick Sullivan to Newfoundland and, of course, any family he may have had in Ireland.

I would also like to find information about Michael Malone and Catherine Clarke, where they were born and family in Ireland.

I have no idea of the county they may have lived in but know the Sullivan surname is in County Cork.   It was also suggested to me that the Malone family may be in County Wexford.

If there is any way I can trace my Irish roots, I would be very pleased if anyone could be of assistance or suggest where I may find further resources to trace them.  We are planning to visit Ireland in late August/early September of 2013 and hope to have some basic information to be able to do in-person search.

Thank you.

  • No real help with your search.   I was checking the "Newfoundland Grand Banks" web site and did not see your entry posted.  There are other looking for Sullivan's on the board, none are your combination but never hurts to post everywhere you can.

  • Hi,

You might try for information on Patrick in the ships crew lists / captains lists at the Newfoundland Archives.  These documents often list place of birth &/or home port.  There are more maritime records available through the UK archives which may be available through FindMyPast or Ancestry or directly from the NA if he was involved with transatlantic sailing.
