  • Hi

My grandmother's people came from the Behamore that you mention.

I have attached an entry from the 1901 Census which lists an Elizabeth Rolleston-Spunner (87) as head of a household in the townland of GLASSHOUSE which is quite close to Behamore.

The Rolleston connection is interesting also as the Local History Society down that way (Shinrone) are currently involved in a big project on the Rolleston burial grounds.

Perhaps you already have this info.

Let me know if you would like more contact details for Shinrone Local History group.

Best of luck in your search

  • Hi, John,

I just joined this message board today.  I have SPUNNER ancestry; although until today, we had always spelled it SPOONER.  No wonder my progress was slow...

Today on FamilySearch.org, in "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," I found the marriage of my great-great-grandparents, Susan SPUNNER and Robert Roe HURST in 1864, in Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland. Also listed are marriages for Sarah SPUNNER in 1870, and Maria SPUNNER in 1874, which are the same that other members of this board have already drawn your attention to. It would appear that these three brides are all sisters; in any case, my Susan's death certificate does name "George SPOONER and Margaret FARMER" of Ireland as her parents.  Also listed in the Irish Civil Registration abstracts is the death of Margaret Spunner in Borrisokane; date is given only as a range: Oct - Dec 1893.  She was born in 1812, per this source.  I'm hoping to confirm that this is their mother, Margaret FARMER Spunner.

My ancestors, Susan (SPUNNER) and Robert Roe HURST, left Ireland sometime between their 1864 marriage and 1871, when they appear in the census of Canada in Gloucester, Russell, Ontario. Their religion is noted "Church of England" (but I found no HURSTs or SPUNNERs in the one Anglican cemetery in Boorisokane found online; still tracking that). Robert & Susan may have reached Canada as early as March 1867, when my great-grandmother, Margaret G. HURST was born; sources to date are a little fuzzy on her birthplace, but most say Canada.  Robert and Susan had four or five additional children: Sousa (b.1869; d.aft.1901), Sarah (b.1871-75; d.1916-30), Joseph Roe (b.1879-d.1904), Robert George (b.1883-d.1887), and possibly Matthew Robert (b.1875; d.aft.1930) -- I'm still puzzling over him, but he did live with Susan and Robert in Buffalo in the 1898 New York Census .  It is likely that all the children after Margaret were born in or near Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA.  Robert Roe, Susan, Joseph Roe, and Robert George are all buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo (see FindAGrave.com), as is Sousa's husband, William BARTHOLOMEW.

Margaret G. HURST marr. John Graham MILLER in 1886 in Buffalo.  Their second daughter, Myrtle Grace MILLER, marr. Andrew Edward KRIEGER in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York in 1917, the same year Margaret died.  Myrtle and A. Edward were my paternal grandparents.  Their son (my father), Andrew E. KRIEGER, Jr. marr. Nancy Elizabeth JONES in Toorak, Victoria, Australia in 1942. Dad was an American fighter pilot, evacuated from the Philippines to Melbourne; they lived in the United States after the war.  So -- we share a bit of an Australian connection!  One of us will have to figure out exactly how we're related.

Okay -- enough for tonight; my head is spinning.  Let's stay in touch as we progress!

  • Hi again, John,

The site www.RootsIreland.ie is a subscription site that I don't belong to, but for a "free" trial, one can access very minimal abstracts.  Listed therein is "Spunner, Margaret -- Church burial, Co. Offaly -- 1893  -- age 81."  I think it very likely that this is our Margaret FARMER Spunner, widow of George.  They may have been Church of Ireland (Anglican), as their daughter Susan & husband Robert Roe HURST listed their religion as Church of England in the 1871 Canadian Census.  I'm not having much luck yet finding comprehensive cemetery transcriptions in Ireland, though.
