Hello

I went to Killosolan in April 2001 seeking information about my great-grandfather John Leonard, who emigrated to USA in 1871 I believe, and was married to Mary Clarke, from the Caltra/Castleblakeney area. I saw a small graveyard there with some Leonards but have no idea if they were related. There were a lot of Clarkes and Leonards, I discovered. I think John Leonard was born on June 13, 1853 and i know he died in Long Island, NY on 24 January 1913. There are a number of descendants in the New York area of USA who would be thrilled to get any additional information. Thanks in advance. Erin McQuiston

  • Hi Erin

Many thanks for your genealogy message. I am familiar with the parish of Caltra, my grandmother was from that area. There are a lot of Clarkes in this parish. I will forward your message to our volunteers in Caltra and see what genealogy information we can get for you.

I can also check at the church records in Caltra, if you wish. The local parish recently did a mapping of the church graves, so there maybe some information there as well.

I will be in touch, as soon as I have any info for you.

  • thanks Paula

i posted more details @ the Clarkes  on the Caltra page. I tried to copy & paste it here but was unsuccessful. Erin   I also didn't mean to underline but my iTouch isn't cooperating right now.

  • Hello Paula & other volunteers

I'm uploading these in case they can be of help to the volunteers helping me or helping others. You can delete them if the quality is too poor to post or for any other reason.

One is of the man at the Killosolan Post Office. My driver & I had stopped in there and explained my quest. Then we went to the cemetery where I took photos of the Leonard gravestone (no idea if they're related),  a shrine nearby, and the farm area there. By the time we went back down the road, the man from the post office had called around for help for me. He found out the Clarkes that died in the 1950s were in Caltra. He actually stood in the middle of the road to flag us down so he could give me the information. I never got his name, but I'll always be grateful. Erin McQuiston

  • Hi Erin

Just read your reply. The picture of the gentleman looks like Bernie Higgins from Caltra(i think!) He would know the Clarkes from the grague/caltra/kilasolan area.  I have also spoken to a lady in Castleblakeney and emailed her your genealogy message.

Will get back to you shortly.

    Paula
