My great grandfather, Michael Reid, married Winifred Gara on 17 January 1877, in St Nathy's Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen.
Michael Reid's father is noted as Lackey Reid, deceased. I am trying to find out if Lackey is an abbreviation for another name as I have never seen it anywhere else. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Lacky is a nickname for Laurence and Laughlin.
I hope this is helpful.Patricia

Hi Patricia
Many thanks for your reply - I had thought of Laughlin but not of Laurence. I had also wondered if it might have come from Malachy as I have seen another record where Malachy is spelled as Malacky. However, this gives me something to go on so thank you.

In Roscommon it can be and abbreviation for both Malachy and Loughlin.
This index of variations might help...
