Hi I'm trying to trace information about my Great, great grandfather Charles Curtin. He was born in Abington in 1822 and was the son of Charles Curtin and Ellen McMahon. He married Catherine Ryan in January 1847. He had some of his children there including my Great Grandfather Edward. They all migrated to NY state in late 1840's.
I'm traveling to ireland in June and it would be wonderful if I can locate any records about them or church. Thank you so much
Mary

Hi Mary
I have had a look in our church records and here is what i found,
Charles Curtin and Ellen McMahon - 3 Children found
- Charles b 15 July 1815 sponsors William O'Brien and Bridget Connell
- Honora b 13 Jan 1820 Sp Michael Fitzgerald and John McNamara
- Terence b 09 Sept 1821 sp ------------ and Mary Moloney
Note: Above date are baptismal dates , Mothers on second child is Mahony not McMahon but i still believe to be from same family as there not many Curtins in the first place. They may have had children previous to 1815 but there would be no record in Murroe cause our records start around 1814
No Record of the marriage found for Catherine Ryan and Charles Curtin , its Possible the bride is not from the parish and tradition at the time was to get married , in the brides parish , Only one child found , to the above couple
- Mary b 11 Jan 1850 sp John Ryan and Sarah Rourke
It is possible that other children were baptised in other neighbouring parishes such as Cappamore , or Caherconlish depending on where they lived and if they lived bordering two parishes, sometimes they would go the nearest church .
Hope this helps if ya have any other question let me know

Aine,
Thank you soo much for the quick response. I looked up on my family tree and gravestone and it said Charles Curtin 1822, so either this is a different one or they had the wrong date on the gravestone... Hard to say. i have a brother Thomas born in 1816. I'm thinking this may be a different family. So either I hooked my great great grandfather up with the wrong person o they didnt' have his birthdate right.
It's difficult to get records I know. I will have to look through my papers further. But I do have Mary who was born in Jan. 1850 so that is correct for Catherine Ryan and Charles Curtin. My great grandfather was Edward and was the oldest, but it doesn't sound like his name was in this book. He was born in 1847. So as you said, they may have lived in another parish nearby and he was christened there.
What would be the best way to check the neighboring parishes? Thank you again!

Hi Aine, Mary Savage is my cousin and by chance I found this posting. I believe that Charles Curtin and Catherine Ryan (parents were John Ryan and Mary Maloney) were married in 1847 in Castleconnell. They were married by a Father Kinney and I believe that there was a priest by that name at Castleconnell. Edward was probably baptised there as well. Sometime after Mary was born in 1850, they emigrated the the US. The rest of the children were born in Northern NY. I met Father Tom Ryan in Murroe in April 2011. I did not have time to look further in Castleconnell. Are there any volunteers in that parish? Thank you very much for your help! Jonathan Curtin

Hi Jonathan,
I had a look at the Castlconnell page , it is not an active page but it may be worth it to leave a message on the page you never who might see it and it may become active in the future.
On the other hand you could contact the parish priest and ask him , they are normally very helpful .

Thanks Aine, I just sent an email to Father Kyne. I really enjoyed meeting Father Ryan. I hope he is doing well. If you see him please give him my regards. We were there in April 2011 and he was going to a funeral lunch, but graciously took the time to help us! Jonathan
