Hello! I descend from Cornelius Barry and Mary McNamarra through their daughter Catherine Barry Manning (b. 15 Jun 1847 in Chesterville, Dundas, Ontario, Canada). Cornelius Barry was born abt 1808 in County Cork; his wife Mary McNamarra was born abt 1817, also in County Cork. I am not sure if they married in Ireland or in Canada where they immigrated to, but I have found them in the Census records for Winchester, Dundas, Ontario, Canada from 1851 through 1891, so they would have emigrated prior to 1851. I believe Cornelius died in Canada in 1893.
They are Roman Catholic, and their children were all born in Canada (John, Cornelius, Garrett, Catherine, Ellen, Michael, Mary & Margaret). I descend through their daughter, Catherine, who married Thomas Manning in Canada in 1871.
My cousin will be traveling to Ireland in early April and will be in County Cork. If anyone is able to direct us to where we might be able to find additional information - or even our relatives in Cork we would be so grateful.
Many thanks!
Mary Anne

Dear Maryanne:
Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.
I have found a baptism entry for Mary McNamara with an 1817 date of basptism in the parish of Macroom.
As Barry is a very common surname in Cork, it can be difficult to narrow down. I note that there was a Barry family in Macroom with baptisms but not with the correct name. There is a Cornelius Barry noted on Roots Ireland, but that is an INCORRECT transcription, and the surname is actually Buckley (from the original register).
Mary McNamara
Date of Baptism: 1 October 1817
Father: Daniel McNamara
Mother: Ellen Herlihy
Parish: Macroom
There were other entries on the Roots Ireland website for Mary McNamara but with different years.
If you would like further assistance prior to your trip, please email me directly at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

Hello Jane,
Where would I go to find the original record for that baptism of Mary McNamarra? Would that be Roots Ireland?
Thank you,
Pam (Mary’s cousin)

Hi Pam:
You can use Roots Ireland as they are a transcription service, but you would definitely want to look at the original record.
At the bottom of the transcription, Roots Ireland has a blue button which allows you to view the microfilmed register where the record came from.
I have sent your information to Brenda and Lena and one of them will be in contact with you. Let me know if you need anything further.
All the best,
Jane
