I have researched my Moriarty family in ths area and am seeking the location of Oughreigh which appears on the baptism record of Michael Moriarty on 9 July 1851, his parents, Michael Moriarty and Ellen Daly  from Church Records on the Irish Genealogy Website.

Michael Moriarty and Ellen Daly of Keelleigh  were married in February of 1844.

In 1849 the couple are recorded as living at the Township of Rossanean.

I am wondering if their is another name for Oughreigh, or whether is is no longer in the Parish of Killeentierna.

I looked at the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0664 for 1851 and the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Killeentierna civil parish.

     https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kerry/killeentierna.htm

Besides Michael Moriarty, I found three other baptismal records where the family lived in Oughreigh. I then took the names of the fathers and mapped them to the Griffiths and in all three cases, the family lived in Reavaun townland.

I went to Google Maps and found that Rossanean and Reavaun are 2.3 miles apart by car but much closer as the crow flys. My conclusion is that  Oughreaigh is a placename for an area partially in Rossanean and partially in Reavaun.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply.

I notice that Rossanean is listed as Townland in both Molahiffe and Killeentierna, whereas Reavaun is listed only in Killeentierna. Is it likely that these 2 Rossanean Townlands span both parishes?

Are the Moriarty Listings all in the name of Michael Moriarty or are there other first names?

There was one other Moriarty in the Griffiths for Kileentierna--- a Patrick Moriarty in Gortshanavoge townland.

Interesting question on Rossanean townland in the two civil parishes which border.  One is 300 acres and the other 273 acres and possibly they border each other across the parish boundaries. I need to do some more research to see if I can find more detailed maps of the area.

I went to townlands.ie and looked at Killeentierna parish and Rossanean townland. If you look at the link below, you can see that the other Rossanean townland in Molahiffe civil parish borders Rossanean (Killentierna) to the west. So side by side across parish boundaries and locally it would be one townland of 570 acres.
