Seeking ancestors of Bernard Loonam and Catherine Dolan. They were married 20 Sep. 1870 in Banagher. Bernard was from Clongawney and Catherine was from Lumcloon. My maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Loonam, was a daughter and one of eleven children. My grandmother emigrated in 1906 to Chicago and married Martin Maloney there before settling in Niagara Falls, NY.

  • Hello,

have you already found this entry in the 1901 census -

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/King_s_Co_/Mounterin/Clongawny_More/1460779/

Residents of a house 3 in Clongawny More (Mounterin, King's Co. (I attach the pdf)

The name is very unusual - I will see if I can locate any present day Loonams in the area of Clongawney (west of the town of Banagher).

    regards

  • Hello Dolores,

Thank you for the reply and the pdf of the 1901 census. Yes, I already have that record but I really do appreciate you sending it. The second person in that list, is my maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Loonam. Kate was a widow as her husbund, Bernard, (Bryan), had died 6 Dec. 1900. If I could discover Bernard's siblings I believe I could then connect some family trees here in the U.S. (and also Australia and France) as I am in contact with some other Loonams seeking information. I welcome any contact from current Loonams or Dolans in Offaly County.

  • To seanmacd,

Thank you Jack for the list of Loonam records but how can I open these records to examine them for relevance? Many of them appear to be of interest to me.

  • seanmacd,

On 9 January, you posted to me a reference to prison records for some Loonams. Two of these, I would like more info on. You mentioned Bernard Loonam; 1900 Tullamore and Thomas Loonam; 1916 Tullamore. I found a reference to these records on familysearch.org but it showed just enough information to picque my curiosity. For Bernard, there was no mention of the offence. For Thomas it stated the offence was: absentee. What do you think absentee meant? Do you have access to the actual records or anything that would tell me more?

Youalso indicated a John Loonam showed in the Kings County Directory in 1890 for Tonlemone. Is there more specific information regarding this listing?

All information helps to "tell the story" and that is a part of the genealogy search. I appreciate your help in advance of any visit to Ireland. Thank you much.

There are just two Loonams listed in the present day Co. Offaly telephone book - attached for your information if you want to contact them.

  • David,

My cousin, Kathleen Scully, has done a massive amount of research on Loonams in Offaly and beyond. It was my mothers maiden name and they were from Banagher. Kathleen recently lost her sister so i would leave it a few weeks but i'm sure she would share whatever information she has, and you might have information that might help her, Her email is campkiki@aol.com.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi David,

Just had a look at the Geni website that Kathleen uses and Bernard and Catherine Loonam are in our family tree. Bernard was my Great Grandfathers brother, so that must make us cousins of some sort or other. There is no info beyond your grandmother,Mary Jane, so i am sure she would love to get any info you have.

    Kind Regards,

    Bill Larkin

  • Bill,

Thanks for the message. I have been working with Kathleen for a couple of years now and we have shared a lot of info. I am also on Geni through my wife's account. I do appreciate hearing from you cousin.
