My name is Daniel O'Connell.  I will be visiting Ireland and into the Shanagolden area in September of this year.  I am interested in looking up past relatives from that area.  My great grandfather Michael O'Connell born 1847 and wife Anne Guerin, born 1831   and emmigrated to the U S in about 1889.  Their parents were Patrick O'Connell born  1827 and Anne Reddin.  Before them I have only Brother O'Connell and William Guerin and Mary Ann Dempsey.   Any help would be apprectiated.

  • Hi Daniel,

The Catholic Church records are now available online at: https://registers.nli.ie/  You may be able to find more members of this family in the rcds.

It would be helpful to know where exactly in the US Michael O'Connell and Anne Guirin lived. I'll need that info before I can search any further, as it's too much like looking for a needle in a haystack without a location.

How are "Brother O'Connell, William Guerin and Mary Ann Dempsey" related to your family? Where did they live?

    Best,

    Hi Patti

Michael O'Connell and Anne Guerin immigrated to the U S and I believe settled in The Sious City Iowa area.  My grandfather Frank was born in Henry Iowa and his sister in Dunlap Iowa.  William Guerin and Mary Anne Dempsey were my 2nd great granparents, mother and father to Anne Guerin who married Michael my great grandfather.  William and Mary were from Foynes, Limerick.  "Brother" O'Connell was Michaels grandfather.  Michaels father was Patrick and Patricks father was "Brother". Patrick and his wife Anne Reddin had at least one other son, brother to Michael, and I believe his name was also Patrick....All I know of them is they were born in Ireland, not sure where.

  • Patti   my original post had birth year of Anne Guerin as 1831 and that is a typo.   It is actually 1852.   additionally Mary Ann Dempsey, may have been born in Robertsown.

  • Hi Patti.  I believe I was incorrct about My Grandfather Michaels' brothers name.  I said Patrick, but I believe it to be Daniel.  Wendy from another post here believes Daniel and my Grandfather Michael to be brothers and I think that is correct

  • Hi Patti (and Dan!),

It appears Dan and I have a common relative but these O'Connells are proving difficult.

There is someone on Ancestry who has done some research that I've linked into. They seem to have the ancestors of Dan and I stemming from a "Brother" O'Connell who had a number of siblings and perhaps came to Shanagolden from Carne (sp?), County Clare pre-1850's.Perhaps during the famine.

I think what we have so far is:

Born to Unknown "Brother" O'Connell and Unknown Wife:

    1. Daniel (my relative) b.unknown m. Bridget Kent and their children are in the Shanagolden parish registers starting 1854-1871. Daniel is listed as a baker in Shanagolden for during this whole time. My grandfather, also Daniel, was born in May 1866 and emigrated to Rochester, NY, US. abt 1890
    2. Patrick (Dan's relative) b. 1827 m Anne Reddan. Children were Maria, Michael, Daniel and Patrick. Michael emigrated to Iowa, U.S.
    3. Michael b unknown I believe he emigrated to Australia
    4. Margaret

I'm still not sure this is correct, so any confirmation of anyone would be helpful!

    Thank you!

Look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi Daniel, I have recently been looking at the history of the O'Connell's Shannagolden only to find many different families within the area, all bearing the O'Connell surname. If I get a chance I will have a closer look to confirm that the information you have is correct. Do you know that the first lot of information was actually correct Michael O'Connell and Anne Guerin ? and what the relationship of these two people was to you specifically?

You say that your visit is a Saturday and only the afternoon, can I deduce from this that you will be on a tour of some kind? Saturday may prove a litle more difficult for one expert in this area and an afternoon is not long so I will try to find out as much as I can before your visit.

I look forward to learning more of your schedule please,

    Jennifer Jean

  • Hello Jennifer,

Dan and I think we have common relatives, and I am excited to hear you have been looking at the O'Connells in Shanagolden. I have quite a bit of information about my family there (Daniel O'Connell b 1867) and I'm hoping to learn more. I would love to hear if you have additional information. I too am planning a trip. In fact, I was supposed to be there now but have had family business to attend to in Germany instead. Soon though!

    Thank you,

  • Hi Daniel, I am reserching my Guerin relatives and came across your message. I hope your trip went well by the way. My Guerin relatives settled in New Zealand in the 1860s. William Guerin born November 1827, from his regimental papers gives his place of birth as Tipperary. I havent been able to get any further than this. However, I am investigating other Guerin families that seem to be related and at the moment am looking at the Guerins from Shanagolden who settled in NSW, Australia. Patrick Guerin born 1817 in Shanagoden, Limerick arrived in Australia at the age of 40 years with his wife Margaret, two sons and a daughter. Another son Thomas was already in Australia and a daughter Mary followed in 1863. I'm just wondering if this family is connected to yours? There may be a link between this family and mine? And I'm also interested in yours as you have a William Guerin. I've been looking for William Guerin birth/baptisms in Shanagolden in case my ancestor came from there ... but I havent found one to date. Apologies if this all sounds confusing. Best wishes, Astrea
