I am attempting to confirm and gather any information on the family of my great grandfather Timothy Shea of Cork. We believe the information about Timothy Shea to be correct on his death information other than the possible misnaming of his father. We believe his father was Daniel Shea who married Mary Sullivan, both from Cork. His death certificate says his father was Donald Shea and mother was Marie Sullivan https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:271L-PR6 . I did find this information that seems to match the family we believe is his. The census information here is after he left Ireland http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Ardigole/Faha_West...

Thanks for any help
Kevin Shea

  • I should have added info that is behind a registration wall at family search. Timothy Shea was born approximately 1882 (Cork?) and died 4 Oct 1910 in Manhattan, New York. Here is the death info from the linked site. Again, I question Donald as his father's given name and believe it was Daniel. Timothy married Bridget Sullivan (we believe in New York) and they had one son, John F. Shea Sr. Timothy died when John was only 5. Bridget Sullivan remarried a Nicolas Walsh in NY in 1916. We don't believe they had any children. Interesting, but probably not uncommon that his mother and wife both had the maiden name Sullivan.

I also believe this to be the household where Timothy lived just prior to moving to the U.S. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Adrigole/Faha_Wes…

  • Daniel and Donald (as well as forms of Donal) are both possible anglicizations of the Irish given name Dónal (in Old Irish, Domhnall), which is one of the oldest and most widespread names in Ireland, believed to come from the Celtic dumnovalos ("world mighty") or dubnovalos ("mighty in the deep").  Parish priests often declined to use the Irish forrm of a name in the parish register, and would often replace it with some Latinized or Biblical name, the latter being what happened with Daniel.  The Donald form is much more common in Scotland, but both were used in Ireland

Not all of the names created by the priests "stuck", though some did.    When people grew up and/or emigrated, they sometimes changed to a different anglicized form which they preferred.

  • Kevin, thank you for those insights. I did not know Daniel and Donald could be variants of Donal. That's very helpful. I'm still a bit stuck on confirming this is the Timothy Shea's family I am seeking. There is no one left on my Dad's side, so we don't have much. It's also more difficult to find information given Timothy died so young in the U.S.

  • This all sounds very interesting, I think that you are never bored in such research because later you can expect the greatest finds. I somehow found your site while I was busy writing my homework. In this work, I also needed to describe my pedigree history. I did not think long and collected information from my relatives and asked https://assignmentbro.com/us/homework-writing-service to prepare and write everything for me. It's a pity, I didn't know about so many resources and services that I found on the forum then)
