I'm looking for information about my maternal 2nd great-grandfather, Jeremiah J Sheehan b. 1867 d. 1906. He migrated from Ireland to New Hampshire, US. I recently found records for his siblings, including some natralization records showing one of them was from Kenamre. This fits with some family stories saying they came from Kerry. Jeremiahs sibling group have death certificates saying their parents were John and Margaret and I found a group of birth records from Tuosist that look like a close match.

I'd like to be more sure that I found the right birth records and to find out more about who these people were and which Sheehans in Ireland they were related to. My uncle took a DNA test recently and it looks like we might be related to another group of Sheehans that migrated to Pennsylvania. Thanks,

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located an 1870 baptismal record in the Tuosist RC records for a Jeremiah Sheehan with father John and mother Honora Murphy.    He had the following siblings: Patrick 1866 Michael 1867 John 1869 Mary 1872. Do these names match up with your family info?

  • I think Jeremiah's parents were John and Margaret. Johns children were Patrick b. 1851, John b. 1856, Catherine b. 1864, Jeremiah b. 1867, and James b. 1870. I've posted most of what I've found so far on familysearch over here:https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/M5V1-8Z3.

The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has images of civil birth records from 1864-1919. I found a record for James Sheehan in 1870 (seventh record) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1870/03340/2224533.pdf  Mother's maiden name was also Sheehan. They lived in Drombohilly townland (there was aDrombohilly Lower and Upper) in Tuosist civil parish.

I also found Jeremiah (fourth record)  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1867/03479/2278646.pdf

    and Catherine (sixth record) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1864/03610/2332118.pdf

  • Sheehan is a very common name in Tuosist - I believe that my great-grandmother Mary Sheehan (born 1950's) is from Sronebrane but I am not 100% positive of the location - She Married a Driscoll from Furnance - Upper Lauragh in 1876 and they came to the US around 1881 - They settled in Holyoke, Mass - my mother's family of 10 grew up in Melrose, Mass.

I am new to this site - do people share DNA information - such as their GEDmatch number?

    Thank you

  • Hi FMSheehan,

Sorry I'm responding to this so late. My GEDmatch number is AB9606360. Also if you are a Sheehan and have Y-DNA, there is a Sheehan surname project on familytree DNA. My uncle is a Sheehan and took a Y-DNA test there, so if out Sheehan lines are related even distantly, taking one of those tests would confirm it.

I'm still trying to find any records of the family of my John Sheehan from before the birth of their daughter Catherine. I haven't found any irish record of their marriage or the birth of their first two children.
