My 4x gr grandfather John Smallwood says on the 1881 Liverpool census that he was born in Wexford Ireland.   The family as far as I know were members of the Church of Ireland.  The only Smallwoods I can find in that area are tenants on the property of the Rev. William Waller in Limerick.  John's marriage certificate 1846 Lancashire, gives his father's name as Daniel, a farmer.

I would be very appreciative of any information at all that can provide the parish where John was christened, and any information at all on the family.  My father's family was and still is on the same farm in Antrim since the 1600's.   So I'm descended from the top and bottom of the country.

Thank you,  Rosemary McConachie-Jones.

  • Hi Rosemary,

I can tell you've made a thorough search for the Smallwoods as I didn't have much luck!

I tried a site called rootsireland.ie but could only find the birth/baptism of a Joseph in Limerick in 1805 and an 'unknown in Limerick 1904.

You are obviously aware of Griffiths Valuation with Joseph and Mary listed in Ardcanny Limerick and Samuel in Learmont Londonderry.

Limerick was done in 1853 and Londonderry in 1858-9.

The 1901 Census has 32 of 44 Smallwoods in Londonderry and 6 in Down.

    The 1911 is similar.

I googled eircom phone book and searched for Smallwoods; there are only 2 - 1 in Limerick and one in Wickolw. I see you've been on message boards and have searched high and low so perhaps if you wrote to these Smallwoods they might happen to know something.

Sorry I couldn't find the parish for you!

  • Irish Petty Sessions registers have mention of a Daniel Smallwood in Limerick in 1858 as a witness. The same register also has a William Smallwood as defendant. Address is Ringmoylan townland, parish of Ardcanny. Earlier, at time of Tithe Applotment in 1833, there was a T Smallwood recorded in Ringmoylan and at time of Griffiths Valuation, a Joseph Smallwood and a Mary Smallwood, both Ringmoylan. The 1901 census has the following Smallwood entry for Ringmoylan:

  • Scotmum,

Thank you for this, another little hint for some background.  The note of Daniel Smallwood in the Petty Sessions as a witness is very interesting.  The only Daniel Smallwood I've found (other than my gr-granddad) was living in Staffordshire which I don't find attached in any way to my Irish connection.  So I will look into this one further.  T. Smallwood I've found before, he was a constable in the police force, but again I can't find a connection to prove he's family.  The Joseph and Mary on the Griffiths I also found and believe they are family, but again must prove with a documentation.  My John's first son was named Joseph leading me to believe he was decended from this Joseph, probably his grandfather.   Thanks again.  Rosemary

  • There seems to be a chap, Ian Smallwood, over on Genes Reunited, with a William Smallwood b Ardcanny c 1800 (so could possibly be the William of the 1858 Petty Session record) and a George Smallwood born c1826, also Ardcanny. Might be worth trying to make contact with him to see if you could perhaps share research on the surname in the Parish.

  • Hello Rosemary,

I am of Limerick Smallwood descent. Joseph Smallwood and Mary O'Shea were my direct ancestors.
