My 2x g grandmother is:
Jane Elizabeth Smyth / Smith
1836–1890
BIRTH EST. 1836 • Meath, Ireland
DEATH MAR 1890 • Edenderry, Offaly, Ireland
She married Denis Mallen in 18 Oct 1856 Dunshaughlin and Culmullen, Meath, Ireland
As her last name is so common and found to be spelled both Smyth (our family spelling) and Smith, it has been very difficult to find out who Jane's parents were. She may have been born in the same parish as she was married. When searching for birth records there are some years missing for this parish.
Through DNA research I have found MANY matches that I believe fall on this family line. Several 4th cousin matches are also from Meath. Surnames associated with these DNA matches include: McDermott, Cherry, Nugent and Linn.
Would appreciate any info or assistance anyone can give!
Thank you
Karen

I don't know if you are using the subscription site Roots Ireland for the Dunshauglin RC records but they appear to have a gap in records from 1833-1849 which likely covers when Jane Smyth was baptized if she was baptized in that parish. However, the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0922 on the NLI site appears to have records from 1789 until January 1843 and then there is a six year gap and records resume in 1849. I suggest you scan the parish register for a possible record for your ancestor.

Hi Roger,
Thank you for your time responding and your suggestion. I scanned 3 years each way around 1836 at the NLI and could not find her. She could be there and I just didn't see it. The writing is so challenging. If only the historians knew we would be reading the records so carefully 185 years later and would print instead of write in cursive! Jane Elizabeth's husband Denis Mallen (I have yet to find his birth record either) was supposed to have come from Dungannon, Tyrone, and further back, originally the family was suspected to have been from Armagh. I have some clues that several families in our tree were originally from the North migrated southward in the early 1800s. Perhaps Jane was born in in Northern Ireland or somewhere along the way. It is a huge brick wall for our family. I am hoping to come across someone with a well developed tree one day...
