Hello,

I am trying to determine where MARY SNEE (born approx 1811) is from.  Her obit and death cert state County Galway.  She married JOHN FINN (born approx 1801).  I do not have confirmation of where John was born either.  They had the following children:

Michael Finn b-Jan 1843 Ireland

John Finn b-Nov 1847 Ireland

Mary Finn b-Aug 1850 Ireland

Patrick Finn b-Mar 1855 Nottingham Eng

JOHN and MARY Finn left Ireland for Nottingham Eng sometime after 1850 and before 1855 (when their last child - Patrick was born)

How can I confirm the county and then parish of where John Finn and Mary Snee were from?  I cannot find them on

irishgenealogy.ie

Thank you for any and all suggestions you may have!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, it appears that John Finn and Mary Snee were from a parish that no longer has records back to 1850 or earlier. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a marriage record and did not find any baptismal records for Children of John Finn and Mary Snee.

Finn was a fairly common surname in the mid-19th century and found in many counties. Snee on the other hand in the mid-19th century was less common and around 1855 was found only in Mayo and Sligo and one family in Roscommon. That is not to say that there were no Snee families in Galway in earlier years. In fact, I looked at the 1828 Tithe listings for Co. Galway and found a number of Snee households in Killoran civil parish so perhaps that is where Mary was from. Killoran civil parish. Killoran civil parish is in southeast Co. Galway and the RC parish is Mullagh and records start in 1859

  • Thank you Roger for this information.  I'm still stuck with my FINN and SNEE connection.  If Finn is really from County Mayo and SNEE is from Galway, my thought now is they lived in towns that were close to the border of their counties.  My search continues.....

  • I'm at a loss.  If my relatives are from a parish that no longer has records available (prior to 1850), is there any other options for me to check?  I see both Snee's and Finn's in the Tithe in county Mayo, Kilmovee and Aghamore.  But it doesn't help me becuase I do not know their parents names.

  • No other record options available. Ireland Reaching Out published this article earlier this month.  https://emailer.emfluence.com/viewaswebpage/CD02CD9C-161F-40F6-9341-5A2CC057D501

Let me know if the article does not come up.
