Looking for ancestors: Coughlin/Delaney
Sylvester Coughlin was born about 1792 and married Margaret Delaney. Two daughters were baptised at St. Catherines (RC), Bridget, bapt. 28 June 1824, and Margaret, bapt. April 1829. A son, Petrus (Peter) was baptised at St. Nicholas Church on 17 July 1831. The family emigrated to Newark, New Jersey about 1831-1833. At least five more children were born in New Jersey. Looking for information about Sylvester and family before they left Ireland.

hi,
Thank you for your message.
Luckily, the families that you are looking for hail from Dublin! This means that there is a greater chance of you finding records of the family in the pre 1800 period. Generally, in Ireland records for this era do not exist-only in the more built up urban area of the time.
Church records are probably the best source of information you will find. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which will help however, is the irishtimes. Here they give an overview of what records are available for specific parishes. Follow this link to see Dublin city parishes:
In Ireland, in the 18th/19th centuries the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country, as a result the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers. So even if the family were Catholic it may also be worth your while to check the Anglican registers. You can do this here: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
Also, both Catholic and Church of Ireland records from the pre 1900 period are currently being uploaded to www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html free of charge. However, as this is an on-going project not all records are available yet.
You could also do a search of the Tithe Applotment Books. This is a land record compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. You can search it here: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
Some other websites which may help you are:
