According to the 1911 Census my 2X and 3X Grt grandmothers were living at 87 doagh Grange, a private dwelling.  On the census report, my 3x grt grandmother Jane Steele is listed as a "lady's nurse."  I'm curious if anyone might know of a family in this area who would be able to afford to hire a 'lady's Nurse".  I would love to see/learn more about that.

My 3x Great Grandmother Jane Boyd Steele lived with many of her children, in various locations throughout Ireland and Scotland.  In 1911 she was in Doagh living with Mary Rainey and her 5 children.  (Her husbnad Robert was in New Jersey, USA during this census).  Shortly after, Robert returned from America, moved his family to England, had a 6th child and then left for America in 1919.

I would be interested in connecting with anyone who might know if these two families; The Rainey's and Steele's.

Thanks!

  • Susan,

In my opinion Mary Rainey was having a little fun when she put “lady’s nurse” down for her mother’s occupation. You can see that in 1911 Mary had 6 children under 10.  I think her mother was helping look after them, and consequently Mary had her tongue firmly in her cheek when she completed the form. Mary herself was the “lady” referred to.

In the 1901 census her mother was described as an “annuitant” ie she had income from an annuity or pension (perhaps triggered when her husband died). So she didn’t need to work professionally I suspect, and just helped Mary nurse and rear her children.

The Steel(e) family don’t appear to have any obvious ancestral connection with Ireland. Mary and her mother were born in Greenock so presumably that area would be the place to look for her relatives.

I wondered if this probate abstract might relate to Robert Rainey senior:

Rainey Robert of Randalstown county Antrim retired engineer died 7 May 1924 Administration Belfast 16 June to Mary Ann Rainey widow. Effects £388 16s. 6d.

Above was aged 72, so born c 1852.  That in turn seems to lead to this family:

Rainey is a very common name in Randalstown. Here’s son Francis’s birth in Ballygrooby, Randalstown in 1880.  So the above family has some connection with Randalstown. Ballygrooby is on the outskirts of Randalstown as you approach from Belfast.

Now the main snag with the above family is that the mother’s maiden name is Leech not Johnston. Can’t explain that but a number of trees on Ancestry appear to think it’s the same woman.  Not sure what their evidence is. Here’s the Rainey-Leech marriage in 1871:

  • It's so funny that you made the observation...because that was my initial thought. A bit of sarcasm...! :-) I love it!

The probate is indeed my ancestor. I discovered that document while visiting PRONI as part of a research trip. I was quite taken aback by the amount of money/stocks left to Mary Ann Leech Rainey. Yes the mix of Johnston and Leech families is as yet unresolved.  My grt gramdfather Robert Rainey, listed his parents as Mary Johnston and Robert Rainey on his marriage.  However his birth record very specifically shows Mary Leech daughter of Ellen Moore Leech.  In fact that same Ellen Moore Leetch of Boundary St shows up on numerous births and deaths of her grandchildren.  To make it more interesting, I have DNA matches to a family of Robert Johnston who married an Agnes McKay Moore. Robert Johnston is listed as the father of children to Ellen Moore Leetch.  Ellen Moore was listed as a widow when she married Samuel Leetch.  No prior marriage record have been found--I'm thinking that was more sarcasm since Robert Died many years later with many officially documented wives.
