I am a descendent (Great, Great Granddaughter) of Stephen Stapleton born 25/05/1822 in Gortnahoe, Tipperary. Stephen is the son of Stephen Stapleton and Mary Dwyer. He married Margaret Breen on 19/07/1847 or 19/04/1847 in Clonoulty. They sailed to Australia with their baby son Michael on the ship 'Panama' in 1949. They had seven children before Maragaret died 11/05/1859.

Stephen then married Honora (Nory) Quirk born January 1841 in Clonmel. They were married on 08/10/1860 at Yass NSW. Honora had been employed to take care of Stephen's seven children when his wife Margaret had died. Stephen and Honora went on to have eleven childen of their own. Honorah Quirk is my Great, Great Grandmother.  Stephen died at Canowindra NSW in 02/01/1885.

I am taking my mother to Ireland in September/October this year and would like to take her to visit Gortnahoe and the graves of Stepehen's parents and/or siblings.

Can you please give me any information on Stephen's family who stayed behind in Gortnahoe when Stephen migrated? Would he have any relatives still in the area? Would you also have information on the location of the graves of Stephen's parents or siblings?

We would very much appreciate any information on Stephen's family.

Kind regards

Suzanne Dickson

  • Hi Suzanne,

Thank you for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you before your visit to give you some advice.

It may be an idea to contact the local parish priest to arrange an appointment while you are here. He may be able to help you or give you some advice as to what graveyards are in the area. Here is a link to their contact page:

Alternatively you could contact the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre for some assistance, however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
