Hello Fellow Searchers.

I have done some work on my mother's side of the family tree and found linkages back to Ireland. I have details of a relative coming to Australia on the Argyle arriving in Sydney 1st April 1839. His name was Andrew Elliott (1771-1855) and he, his wife Elizabeth and their son Thomas all emigrated in 1839. They came from Fermanagh Ireland. I don't know the parish. I would appreciate any help/information on any decendents befoe him.

Thank you & kind regards,

Bruce

  • Bruce,

Elliott is a very common surname in Fermanagh. There are 659 in the county in the 1901 census.

Andrew’s birth and marriage are all long before the start of statutory registration in Ireland (1864 for births and 1845 for marriages). So you won’t find a birth or marriage certificate. Normally you would have to rely on church records for earlier events. However not all the records have survived and what does still exist isn’t all on-line.

If you don’t know which parish they lived in, you could try searching the church records for Fermanagh in PRONI in Belfast. (A personal visit is required to do that). About half the parishes lost their records in the 1922 fire in Dublin but half still exist.

A small part of the 1821 census of Fermanagh has survived, I searched it but did not find Andrew.

Statistically your family were probably Church of Ireland (ie Anglican). And they almost certainly arrived in Fermanagh from the Scottish Borders in the early 1600s, as part of the Plantation. (Half the population of Fermanagh have similar origins). The Elliotts were what are known as Border Reivers. You can google that.
