Margaret was born about 1840 in Newmarket on Fergus.  Her parents were Peter and Johanna Quinn.  She married Edmond Kelly (born Tulla) on 6th October 1862 in Ennis.  Their daughter Ann was born in 1863.  In 1864 they migrated to Australia, departing from Plymouth and arriving in Sydney in April 1864.  They were sponsored by Margaret's sister, Mary Quinn who was already living in Australia.    I have so far found no records relating to the Quinns in Newmarket - most of the above comes from the shipping record.  I am the great grandaughter and live in Australia.

  • Hi,

I attach a copy of the marriage of Edmond Kelly and Margaret Quin. It may help to identify her family.

There is a record of a Peter Quinn in Drumline, Newmarket-on-Fergus in 1841.

I have checked for birth records of Margaret and Mary with parents Peter Quin/Quinn and mother "Johanna" with negative result.

What was the surname of Margaret's mother and the names of Edmond's parents?

  • Dear 'McCoy'

Many thanks for your speedy response. A few comments below:

    1. The marriage record of Edmond Kelly and Margaret Quinn

They were married at Martin Dillon's house in Market Street, Ennis. The witnesses were Martin Dillon and Patrick Hoare.

I don't think there are any clues here as to relatives.

    2. There is a record of a Peter Quinn in Drumline, Newmarket-on-Fergus in 1841

    Of birth/marriage/death? Or Other?

    3. Birth records of Margaret and Mary with parents Peter and Johanna Quin/Quinn with regative results.

    Yes, so have I

4, What was the name of (a) Margaret's mother and (b) Edmond's parents

(a)Unknown (b) Patrick Kelly and Mary Sheen/Sheehan (from Edmund's death certificate) - for whom I can find no records from Tulla

I attach a copy of the shipping record from which I have gleaned the scanty details I possess. The ship is the Queen of the East which departed Plymouth 26th January 1864

AND a computer printout of the same record

    Shanan,

Thanks for the information on Edmond Kelly.

The surnames Sheehan and Skehan were common in the Tulla to Killaloe area in that period.

Considering the number of County Clare passengers on board, hopefully, somebody will have some information.

I attach a record of a Peter Quin, with Daniel Quin, Laurence Quin and John Hassett - all of Drumline 1848 -

    Newmarket-on-Fergus Petty Sessions Court.

    County Clare library  www.clarelibrary.ie -  has a record of baptisms from 1828 - catholicparishregisters.ie.

You may have checked it out already - Genealogy

There is a reference to "Quin" at pages 36, 81, 89, 93, 96. Unfortunately no reference to a Peter found.

    Regards,
