I'm interested in the Stockham family of St. Andrew's Parish, Dublin. I have the following newspaper abstract and am trying to find out more about the family.

13Sep1842 The Belfast News-Letter [Newspaper-Belfast]

On the 6h inst., in St. Andrew’s Church, Dublin by the Rev. James Nevin, Mr. Edward Coony, of Grace Hill, County of Antrim, to Johanna, only daughter of Mr. William Stockham, of Essex Street.

Johanna Stockham had a brother named Gabriel Henry Stockham (born 1816) who moved to America. He settled in Chicago and finally in San Francisco, California.

Gabriel and William, his father were hatters in Dublin and in London, England. William Stockham died abt. 5July1861 and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin.

  • Hi

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for members of the family. The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool), this could be a good place to find more information.

  • I'm trying to find the Stockham family in the Dublin Tithe Books. They were living at 22 Essex Street. Do you know what parish they would be a part of?

As far as I know only William's son Gabriel came to the US. Gabriel arrived in 1847 on the ship Orphan. I'm trying to trace his family back in Ireland.

  • I am a direct descendant, and am also trying to trace back in Ireland. Maybe we can trade notes? William Henry Stockham is my 3rd Great Grandfather, my father's name is also William Henry Stockham II. I always thought the first was my great grandfather but now I know better :)
