I have all the birth/death/marriage records up to and including my grandparents (John and Ellen).

I have looked at Thomas Stundon in the past and have him down as candidate but the Stundon name seems to be prolific in N. Kerry and many are named John so I'm not really sure. (Edit to say that after further research based upon your contribution thatThomas IS my great grandfather). A million thanks. From this I've started to piece together a whole lot more.

I can provide all the verified info I already have if it's of any use to anyone.

The other thing I'm trying to discover is what is the link between my family and "uncle" John Conway of Lough Gur, Co. Limerick and whether or not his son "Ned" is still with us. My aunt Maura (Mary Stundon) went to live with John Conway and his son Ned sometime after her parents passed 1938 and 1939. She lived at Holy Cross, Lough Gur until her passing in 1974 in Limerick. We know nothing o0f the Conways at all even though we have photos of them.

My great grandfather was indeed Thomas and many thanks for that. But it's now blown my long held belief right out of the water that Ellen, my grandmother, was born in Limerick City to Patrick and Mary Madden. The marriage of John Stundon and Ellen Madden states that Edmond Madden was her father and that they came from Sandford, near Causeway in Kerry. Of course, there is no immediate trace of them but I must confess, I haven't looked that hard yet.

That's the problem with hunting down your roots, you find that much of what you think you know or have been told is completely wrong! Still, I have discovered so much to pass on to my grandchildren and I hope they visit Ireland, particularly Kerry and Limerick when they're old enough to want to learn. What's more, whilst it can be very frustrating, it's so enjoyable when things fall into place.

BTW, My dad's sister Mary (Maura to all who knew her) along with the mysterious John and Ned Conway, earned a paragraph or two in Oriana Atkinson's book, "The South And The West Of It". It's a wonderful little snapshot of her everyday life in the cottage and all that was important to this ordinary Irish lady. If it's legal to pass on, I have an electronic copy her if you'd like to read it.

The first pic is of Maura; unknown; Ned Conway; Unknown; John Conway.

The second is Seamus ? and my dad. This is probably 1944. Seamus is another complete mystery to us although obviously important to the family at the time.

The third is a cutting from a Limerick newspaper with a story about the dig at Lough Gur. It features Ned Conway.

No problem! I enjoy assisting people with finding more about their family. As background, I've been a volunteer for IRO for over ten years. I actually live in Maryland but my grandmother was from Castlemore parish in Co. Roscommon which explains my user name.

I found a death record for a John Conway in Loughgur in 1970 (see second record at the link). The informant was a Maura Stundon niece in law. So likely John Conway married a sister to either John Stundon or Ellen Madden and I would guess Ellen Madden.

I believe I located the 1918 marriage of John Conway and Mary Madden. The father of Mary was Edmond. The same name shown for the father of Ellen Madden on the 1902 marriage record to John Stundon.

Lastly, I located the January 8 1919 civil birth record for Edmond Conway, father John and mother Mary Madden, So Ned would be 105 if he was alive today

It's wonderful that someone all those miles away can help people like us get to really know our heritage.

Ned died in Limerick hospital in 1962 at the age of 42 so that tallies exactly. Also his occupation and cause of death confirm it's "our ned"". We were still in touch with Maura then (golden harp badge and fresh shamrock for my birthday every 17th March), but none of us that are left can ever remember being told about this.

Now to find out where Maura actually lived because we've been told by the people of Loughgur that it was one place but tracing the route taken in the aforementioned book, "Maura's cottage" as we knew it was at the top of the hill just before the wedge tomb as you come from Holy Cross.

I've learned more from my visit to this site than I have in the last 20 years!

Hello again Roger. Thanks to you, I think I've found just about everything that's possible to find, except perhaps the location of Maura's cottage. But, merely out of curiosity, I wonder if anyone can identify the Limerick area highlighted in the attached file?

It's something like "Caherline". I'd just like to know if it still exists or if not, whereabouts it was.

Caherline townland is in Ballybrood civil parish and is located south of Caherconlish. You can go to Google Maps and find the exact location.

Hi again. Thanks to everyone here, I've found all the info I ever wanted and much more! But I'm still stuck on where the Conway's actually lived

I've tied John Conway down to two houses according to the 1901 and 1911 censuses. These are "House 53, Loughgur, (Knockainey), Limerick" and "House 26, Loughgur, (Knockainey), Limerick": See attached pic.

Is there any way of finding out where these houses are (or were) on today's maps?
