Based on information I have been able to find I have discovered a Henry Waters Born in Clonfert  in 1814. He died in Clonfert in 1856 and that is more than likely why he did not show up on Griffiths Valuation. Henry was married to a Maria Lyons Born 1816 Henry is the Son of James Waters 1772-1860 and Frances Hibett 1785-1862 The sponsor for Mary , Susan and a son named Berwick J Waters was a J Lyons who must be their Uncle (Assumption) since both parents had passed on by the time of the emigration of Mary or Maria and Berwick in 1864. Berwick’s deposit was paid to the government of New South Wales in 1864 but he failed to embark on the vessel with his sister. He was refunded the deposit in 1866.

There are no Waters Posted in Griffiths in 1856 but There 3 likely Candidates for the Lyon’s side of the Family The Johns seem the most likely best  bet based on Irish naming conventions.

Lyons   James                Killoran                     Clonfert     Galway

Lyons   John                 Ballynakill                  Clonfert     Galway

Lyons   John                 Kilmacshane (Turbett)        Clonfert     Galway

Berwick born 1842 he later shows up in Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey, in a period ranging from 1889 through 1893. He lives at 183 Mercer Street and is a stone mason by trade. He is married to Bridget Malloy born 1845 and from the Reid family tree he has one son John Berwick (probably named after his Uncle see Griffiths comment1874-1942). He married Margaret McGreevy 1881 – 1945 They had seven children. Since some of these children may still be living I have not posted their names

The owner of this tree is a Kristen Reid to whom I have forwarded a message with the initial inquiry

Susan arrived in New South Wales Dec 8 1854 aboard the Lady Kenneway Occupation Housemaid. She may have never married I found a private tree that I will send an Inquiry.

I did not find a passage for a Mary but I do show a Maria

  • Hello Fred,

Thanks very much for that information. Maria may be Mary as Maria is a form of the name. Your research is very much appreciated and is of real benefit to the irelandxo project. As we discussed previously our records here at parish level in Eyrecourt are quite scanty. I understand that you cannot put up some of the family related information that you have acquired and appreciate your sensitivity and care in protecting people?s personal privacy.

By the way Fred I may have discovered the Clonkelagh where members of your own family came from. I told you in the past that I thought that it may have been a corruption of Clonkeagh a townland in Clonfert parish beside Ballinakill where the Reddens live today. However, I now believe it may in fact be in the parish of Tiranascragh as there is a place there known as Clonkela in which a Redden family still resides. If you go to the Tiranascragh page at www.irelandxo.com and speak to Pat Madden the parish administrator. He may be able to make the contact that you need. Clonkela was more than likely a townland at an earlier stage that has through time become obscure and is now what we term a local place-name within another townland Muingbaun. The Redden family is named as residing at house No 12 in the 1901 census and house No 6 in the 1911 census in the townland of Muingbaun.

  • Christie,

Thank you for the information on my Great Grandfather. I have posted a message to Pat Madden.

Since you said your records are scanty are there any Baptismal, Marriage or funeral records transcribed in the parish registers? I have a keen interest in the two Mary's since it does appear that they had untimely deaths.

Anyother information the parish can provide on the other family members would be fantastic.

    Thank You

    Fred

  • Response Received from a Descendant of Henry Waters and Maria Lyons from Australia.

There now appears to have been a forth child Maria.

My sister-in-law is a descendant of Susan WATERS (daughter of Henry WATERS and Maria LYONS), who arrived on the Lady Kennaway in Dec 1854.

Susan (also know as Susanna) married James LYONS 1859 in Wellington NSW. and died 11 Jan 1911.
I have Susan's sister Mary Ann arriving on the Northumberland in 1862, an immigration deposit paid for by Susan LYONS.
I also found record that James LYONS (Susan's Husband) paid an immigration deposit for Berwick and Maria WATERS to come to Australia on the Wallasea which arrived in Sept 1865, but they both defaulted from the Wallasea without giving notice of the intention not to embark.

Found a death for Berwick WATERS in America, not sure if it is the same Berwick.

Have only recently started to research this family for my sister-in-law, so don't have a lot of information as yet.

In a US based Family tree I had found this information posted  in re a marrige in Freethorpe England and I had forwarded this as infomation but it appears erroneous. Here is the response to that information

I'm not too sure about the information on Henry WATERS married to Maria LYONS in Freethorpe, Norfolk, and wondered what the source of the information was.

Also found an old message posted some 1998 for a researcher looking for information on Susan and Mary Ann WATERS. The researcher, who was a descendant of Mary Ann WATERS, has since passed away, so I am unable to follow up on the enquiry.

    They stated:

Henry WATERS a teacher, who was supposed to have gone to the Crimean War and dissapeared.
His wife was Maria LYONS who apparently got married a second time to Mr TARLETON.

This has only added to my confusion. Nothing new when it comes to my family research.

I have been able to fill in some information on Mary Ann WATERS. She married James George Joseph HILL 1865 in Orange NSW, and died in Narrandera NSW 25 May 1898. James G J HILL died in Victoria in 1916.

I have been able to fill in some information on their children if anyone is interested.
