Hello from America! I have been searching for my great grandfather's parents and hope this is the right parish. My great great grandfather was George Swanton and he married Anne Marryott or Anne Noble.  The documents I have from archives here state the two names one from his marriage certificate and one from his death certificate. The name of Rathclaran was mentioned at one point in my search so I though I would try again. This has been a 19 year journey and hope for a break through.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I responded to your other message but I wanted to advise you that I did not find a George Swanton marriage to an Anne Marryott or Anne Noble.

  • Roger, Thank you. It's confusing with the two documents having two different names for the wives. I will continue on and try another area.  There could have been a clerical error. what would be a common error for Swanton?

    Thank you for your help.

    Sincerely,

    Alison

    Found this site  https://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=swanton

Also, in the mid-19th century Griffiths Valuation, all Swanton head of householders lived in Co. Cork except for one in Dublin and another in Co. Fermanagh. What was the religious denomination?

Roger, Thank you SO MUCH for this. Very interesting information. As far as religion is concerned, my dad was raised Catholic but I am thinking it comes from his mothers side of the family.  Who are from Northern Ireland. We are almost positive Protestant , Church of England, was the religion my great grandfather practiced. Going to attach the copy of the marriage certificate from 1890.

Thank you for your interest in my story. I was told that the name may be recorded incorrectly some where along the way. I am thinking that at the birth of Robert George another last name was used but that doesn't explain why I can't find his parents union recorded. I was in Ireland 2017 and went to the National archives as attempted to do this with their geneaolgist but she said I have to find his birth certificate first. Cork, Rathravane, and Bally dehob have been tossed around over the years. My great aunt Gertrude Rose gave our family history for the "Swanton World wide Story" book, I found at the library in Skibbereen. She has his name as George, that he was in her majesty's cavalry where he fought in the boar's war and nearly died when he had his throat slit from ear to ear and survived. The name Nancy Dukelow is mentioned as well, but can't recall right off who she is supposed to be. Maybe she's his mother?

I researched this story and found out that Robert G has children 1891-1900 and disappears for the 1910 census. The family is completely separated with the children all in an orphanage and their mother working as a live in RN three blocks away from the orphanage. In 1920 everyone is back together and his name is now George Swanton. He dropped the Robert moving forward. Sadly he dies in 1934. He was born in 1852, Nov. 2.

Again, thank you for listening to this mystery afoot for me :)

    Have a lovely evening.

If Robert was born in England, is it possible that George and Anne married in England?

  • The collection of partial transcripts of civil marriage records on FamilySearch includes a marriage for Robert William Swanton and Anne Noble in "Skull, Skibbereen" on the 15th June 1850 - possibly connected to your Swanton / Noble clue ?. Since it's included in civil records and before 1864 it's not a Catholic Marriage - so could be Registry Office or probably more likely Church of Ireland. There are two transcripts or the same record - version 1 & version 2 both include father's names as Robert Swanton and Edward E. Noble and reported ages for the the bride and groom. Images of many civil marriages are available on the free Irish Genealogy website, but they do not cover this far back yet, the actual register would show a few additional details such as place of marriage, name of minister or registrar, occupations, places of residence of the bride and groom names of witnesses etc.

The BMD Index shows the marriage as Skibbereen district, with references volume 10, page 103 - these can be used to order a research cert from the GRO.
(The locations included in these extracted records can be towns or parishes, but are sometimes registration districts.)

  • Hello

I am new to this site and I know this thread is a year old but it's of great interest to me as I too have a Noble Swanton situation I'm researching. My great great Grandfather was Edward Elsmere (Elsmore) Noble from Cork, his father was of the same name from what I can gather and married Patience Swanton. My great great Grandfahter went to NZ which is where most of my family still live.

So I am very keen to know how you go and will update you myself and I hopefully find out more information. I'm still stumbling around at the moment.

    All the best, Amanda

  • Hi there! My name is Izak Petrus Scholtz. My paternal grandmother was a Swanton. We are South African. As far as I know my granny was the child of John George Swanton who died 9th of August 1954. Now John George Swanton was the son of Timothy George who were born in the USA and the grandchild of John George Swanton who was from Cork in the 1800's.

But that is unfortunately where I have lost the connection. My wife and I have recently moved to Ireland and would love to see if I can pick up my ancestral roots.

If someone can please help, it would be highly appreciated!
