Hello fellow Sweeney's,

My name is Andrew James Sweeney, originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. I am seeking the birthplace and hopefully relatives of my Grandfather:

Andrew Joseph Sweeney

Born: 25 March, 1856 possibly in County Sligo or County Mayo, Ireland.

His parents were Roger Sweeney & Nora Gilmore. (No dates or places)

He emigrated to the United States at age 14 in 1870, port unknown, and later earned his U.S. citizenship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 5th, 1876.

On June 21st, 1893 he married Mary Elizabeth Kelleher, whose parents, Daniel Kelleher and Margaret Meehan are believed to have come to Philadelphia from County Cork, Ireland. My father, Austin Joseph Sweeney was born on January 9, 1901 in Philadelphia. Both my grandparents died years before my birth and I have only a few living cousins that are in the same boat as me. (born too late)

I have considerable U.S. based documentation (Naturalization papers, application for marriage license, death certificate, etc.) but all say only IRELAND as his place of birth even thought there were spaces provided for City & County. (maybe he was trying to hide?)

Do any of these Sweeney's sound familiar to anyone? I thank you in advance for any help you might provide.

  • Andrew: I checked the Griffiths Valuation head of houshold listing for Roger Sweeney. The survey was conducted in 1856 for Mayo and 1858 for Sligo. There were two Roger Sweeneys listed.

Source Surname First Name Townland Parish County
Griffith Sweeny Roger Glenmullynaha West Kilbeagh Co. Mayo
Griffith Sweeny Roger Cloonacool Achonry Co. Sligo

I checked the 1901 census for Glenmullynaha West and found one Sweeney family. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilbeagh/Glenmullynaha_West/1598924/ There were also two Sweeney families in Cloonacool townland in Sligo. Here is one of the two records. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Sligo/Cloonacool/Cloonacool/1688571/ Glenmullynaha townland is about three miles southeast of the Mayo town of Charlestown. Cloonacool is near Tubbercurry in Co. Sligo. I would focus my research in those areas. Roger McDonnell

If you can connect with these certs you may be able to closer tie down the Birth year. You did not say if Roger and Nora Emigrated to USA.
