I am looking for further information about my Tansey/Tansy family.   Eliza Tansey was born about 1836 in Killoran and married Patrick Egan 15 Feb 1851.  Eliza moved to Rathosay Coolaney onto a farm and remained there until their deaths.

My direct ancestor is Belinda Egan, eldest of 8 surviving children (there were 12 on the census form).  Belinda was born about 1852, but I am unable to find her exact birth.  Her siblings are all registered births.

I'm also trying to find Patrick Egan's family.  He was born 5th July 1836, died March 17 1914, Rathosay Coolaney.  I cannot find his parents either or any siblings.

I did discover Eliza's brother, James Tansey,  b 1828, who moved to Alabama USA and married there.  He died in 1897, Eliza was a beneficiary of his will as was her daughter Sarah.

It is clear that you have done extensive research on your family. Unfortunately, the RC baptismal records for Killoran/Coolaney parish do not begin until 1878. The earlier records were lost. So you will not find any baptismal records for Belinda or her parents.

I also looked at the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Killoran civil parish and there were no Egan or Tansey records so not sure where they were living in 1858.

I can't tell from your note whether you have tested your DNA. You may want to consider a test and pursue your closest matches.

  • Dear Roger,

Thank you for your reply.  Patrick and Eliza Egan had a holding in Rathosey listed on the 1901 and 1911 census.  Belinda with her 3 youngest children had returned to Ireland after her husband William Greenslade had died.  She remained there until her death.

Patrick and Eliza were married in Killoran on 12th Feb 1851.  I received that information from Sligo Genealogical society.  However I thought there might be mention of their parents in the marriage records as I have found in most other cases, which would have given me their names.  Are there any other avenues that might provide that information?

Of Belinda's 3 children who accompanied her to Ireland only Elizabeth Agnes Greenslade left with her brother Robert Patrick who is my direct ancestor.  He was a 1st class bedroom steward aboard one of Cunards liners and Elizabeth emigrated to America when she was 16.  She met her husband Henry Elmer Speakman and they married in 1912. They lived on Rhode Island.

I do have the kit for DNA and will be sending it off shortly.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Kind regards

I don't know if the Sligo Genealogical society sent you the actual parish register entry but here it is:

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632321#page/8/mode/1up

The entry is sparse and the groom and bride are shown on the left and the witnesses on the right. Almost all church marriage records did not shown any info on parents.

The only other data source is the Tithe listings from around 1833. I checked the records and did not see any info for Egans in Rathosay.
