I was thrilled to learn about IrelandXO -- thank you all so much for providing personal connections and research help. I live in the US. My great x4 grandfather, Thomas COAN, was born in "The parish of Kilconnell, County Galway" in 1811; he emigrated to Boston (USA) around 1837. His father was Martin COAN and his mother was Margaret (maiden name unknown).
I realize that there is an XO group for Kilconnell parish, but my research tells me that the catholic church parish for parts of the Kilconnell civil parish is indeed in Aughrim -- and the Coans were Catholic. (I've joined both XO parish groups to cover all my bases.)
Any information you could give me about any COANs in your area would be wonderful. I know there are several spelling variations on the name Coan, but my ancester Thomas signed his US citizenship papers as "Coan."

Roman Catholic church records for Aughrim start from 1828 for baptismal records and from 1829 for marriage records. These can be accessed through the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2431, or the Church of Latter Day Saints ref. no. 1279215. If you have any difficulty, you could write to the parish priest for more assistance.
Do you have any information about the day or place of emigration?
You could also check the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) for more information. The family could possibly be mentioned in these records.
The name Coan could also be "Coen". Perhaps someone living in the local area will be able to offer you more information about the family.
