Thanks for the info on John McCaffrey. I am looking for emigration records or other records that would identify his parents and siblings.

    You haven’t said exactly when John emigrated but if he was still single I’ll assume he was in his 20s and so he left Ireland in the 1830s. There are no departure records in Ireland (the authorities had no need of the information) and most records are on arrival in the US. Passenger records are very patchy for that period, and a lot of migrants went to Canada first  before crossing into the US.  (It was cheaper than going directly to the US). There are hardly any records for entry to Canada before the late 1840s.

    However findmypast and ancestry both have passenger information. You could try them.

    Have you checked his marriage or death certificates for parents names and place of birth? Also was he naturalised as a US citizen? If so, that application may also have some useful personal information about his place of origin and parents names.
