I paid for a look-up on another site and the baptism information I got was from Cahir parish in Co. Waterford.  When I tried to do a search for it, the only Cahir (Caher) parish I can find is in Co. Tipperary, which is where I was originally searching.

Did these counties overlap?  I'm looking for ancestors in the Clonmel area of Tipperary.

Thanks,

Joyce

No Cahir parish anywhere in Ireland. Two Caher parishes in Kerry and South Tipperary.

Co. Waterford borders Co. Tipperary to the south.

Caher parish is a little inland and does not border Co. Waterford.

    Clonmel does border Co. Waterford.

  • Thanks, Roger.  This really has me confused.  I paid for a Church Baptism record from rootsireland.ie and it clearly says Parish/District Cahir, and County Waterford.  The date of baptism was April 1819.  Any suggestions as to how I might proceed with this?  Should I go on the theory that it's Caher in Tipperary?

  • Well, I may have found the answer.  In reading about the history of Clonmel, it appears that in 1896 a small section of Clonmel south of the River Suir was transferred from Co. Waterford to the Co. of Tipperary (South Riding) and given to the borough.  So most likely, if this baptism occured in 1819 and was on the south side of the river, it was indeed in Co. Waterford.

Don't you just love having to do all of this detective work to track down our ancestors, lol.  It sure makes for a great hobby!

    Thanks again,

  • Hello there Joyce and greetings from Waterford

All the Catholic parishes in Co. Waterford are in the Catholic Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.  That Diocese also extends into the neighbouring county of Tipperary.  A dozen or so of Tipperary's Catholic parishes are in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.  Cahir (earlier form Caher) is included among these.

The fact that the records of these Co. Tipperary parishes appear on the Waterford Heritage website betrays the origins of the computer database.  The initial computerization of the parish records in the early 1980s was facilitated by the Catholic church on a diocese by diocese rather than county by county basis.

The parish records for Cahir are found on both the Co. Waterford and the Co. Tipperary websites within rootsireland.ie.  However a quick search on both sites shows a discrepancy between the findings in each case - Waterford site seems to have a more comprehensive set of registers for Cahir.  So watch that when you are doing your research!

I hope the above is of help to you Joyce.  Best of luck with your research.

    Warm wishes to you

  • Tony and Tom, thank you so much for the further detailed information.  Am I correct in assuming that I'll have to wait until I can get to Ireland to do this further research into parishes?  I'm thinking that the National Library in Dublin has the parish records and could be searched in one place?

This is the only Alice Morgan who came up in a search for all counties in Ireland during a 10-year time span, so I'm pretty sure this is my ancestor.  The only other close result was an Alice  "Morigan", born April 1815 in Cahir Parish, Co. Tipperary.  Could be a transcription error, but the Alice Morgan born in 1819 is a closer match.

Would it be possible for me to contact a heritage center in each county, Tipperary and Waterford, and try to search that way.  After paying for numerous individual searches, it's probably as cost-effective to travel to Ireland, which, God willing and the creek don't rise,  I hope to do within the next year!

    Thanks again,

    Joyce

  • By the way, I should add that the father of Alice Morgan was listed as Patrick Morgan, mother Ann Maher, sponsors John Buckley and Margaret Maher.

  • Thank you ever so much for responding.  However, for some reason I am not able to open the link you attached. It seems I don't have the correct decoder, or something like that!   I'll keep trying, but in the meantime, could you please tell me what you found?
