Hello! I am hoping someone can help me interpret the handwriting on this 1836 Marriage Record for Thomas Archbold and Ann Scully in County Kildare.  What is the first name of the witness, last name Archbold?  Also, does the location read as Richardstown or Riverstown - both are in Kildare.   I'd appreciate any help in deciphering these two things.

I went to the subscription site Roots Ireland and they transcribed the following: witnesses Pat Archbold and Catherine Duan. The bride and groom were from Richardstown.

I went to the actual register and can see Richardstown as the correct place name SEE BELOW. The first name of the male witness may be Pat but I looked at other Ps on other entries on the page and the P appears to be different. Were the entries on the page written by two different priests? I will say that if the name was not Pat, I don't have a plausible alternative. Catherine Duan looks legit.

Although the Richardstown entry is clear, the only Richardstown townland is in Mainham civil parish in north Kildare. So was the location a local place name?

  • Thanks so much. I'm trying to find relatives of Charles Archbold, my gg grandfather by looking at all Archbolds living in County Kildare in the early to mid 1800's and drilling down as much as I can for each Archbold family to either rule them in or rule them out as related.  I needed to understand the name of the male witness and the location on the attached marriage record to see if it was consistent with what I believe I know about the family of Thomas Archbole, a possible brother or cousin of my Charles.  I was hoping the Archbold on the record was Peter, as opposed to Pat, since I believe Peter, Michael, Thomas and Richard Archbold are brothers and are all related to my Charles - totally guessing though.

Thank you for looking this record up.  My subscription to Roots Ireland ended just a few days ago!
