  • There is a civil parish (an administrative district) in Roscommon called Tibohine, and you can find more info about it at this link:

    https://www.townlands.ie/roscommon/tibohine/

You'll see a list there of the townlands in the parish, and note that one of them is also called Tibohine, and there's a link there to more info about that townand.

The civil parish is located (in whole or in part) in the Catholic parish of Tibohine, the parish records for which can be found online here:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0558

Those records only go back to 1833, but you may still find Crofton family records there.  Crofton seemed like an English name (and it turns out that it is), so I thought that your ancestors might have been Protestants,  but MacLysaght says, in his Surnames of Ireland, that "[f]amilies of the name settled permanently in Connacht in the sixteenth century, where they became connected with that of O'Connor Don and a century later were staunch supporters of the Catholic cause, thogh some of the name were found on the other side.

  • Graham:

The 1825 Tithe listings for Tibohine civil parish show only one Crofton record-John in Gortaganny townland

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows two Crofton records- Margaret and Mary both in Gortaganny townland  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/tibohine.htm  Likely one of the two was the widow of John.    https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/tibohine.htm

The 1901 and 1911 censuses show one Crofton family in Gortaganny. They were Roman Catholic and presumably older ancestors were also.

As Kevin indicated, the records for Fairymount (Tibohine) RC parish start in 1833 and records for the nearby RC parish of Frenchpark start in 1865.

  • I’m good as certain that Thomas had a brother named Philip. They lived in the same street in Plumstead, Kent and Philip named his brother as executor of his will. Like Thomas, Philip had married in Ireland (Elizabeth Wright, Armagh). He married a second time in Westminster in 1868 when on the certificate he named his father as Henry Crofton, farmer. Hope this helps.

  • Hello Graham!

I am a direct descendent of Thomas Crofton, born Tibohine, Castlerea, Roscommon, 1814. I too am keen to find out more about his family and have just come across the same info as the last poster, Squiddley1957. In the book "Crofton Memoires" 1911, there is mention of Philip Crofton who was Thomas' Brother who indeed married Elizabeth Wright and had two children, Lucy and Jane. He then married twice more to Caroline Harris and finally Rebecca Randall. He had no kids that I am aware of with either of the last two wives. Philip died in 1880 in Plumstead and Thomas Crofton was his executor. The will also lists a few other family members mostly those who he bequethed things to. The marriage licenses do indeed name Henry Crofton as the father of Thomas and Philip and that he was born in Ireland around 1792. That is all the info I have on him. Whereas Thomas' info states being born in Tibohine, Philip's record says he is born in Loughlynn. Albeit close in geography, not sure why the difference. I am curious to know how you are related to Thomas and perhaps we can share notes. Records from this period in Ireland are notoriously difficult to find. There is a graveyard database for Tibohine Parish, but unfortunately it does not mention the name Crofton. I have been trying to link the family to those in the book "Crofton Memoires" since doing that would expand the crofton tree immensely with all the work that Henry Crofton did in 1911 to tell the story of John Crofton Eschetor to the Queen in Ireland in the 15th century.
