We are trying to find the burial location and/or cemetery in which two of our Irish ancestors are buried. Thomas McGovern died at the age of 80 on 6 Mar 1936 in Townland Derrynananta and his wife Bridget Cullen died at the age of 90 on 8 Oct 1954 in Clarbally.  They both appear in the 1901 and 1902 Census in Derrylahan with their children.  When they married Bridget Cullen resided in Drumhurrin and Thomas McGovern resided in Derrylaghan and they were married in the RC Chapel of Glangevlin.

We have checked several graveyard websites, but have been unable to find where they are buried.  We have checked various sites that cover St. Patricks’ Cemetery and the Blacklion Cemetery in RC Parish Glangevlin.  There are many, many McGovern’s buried in St. Patrick’s, but no record for Thomas and Bridget McGovern.

We would love to visit the gravestone for Thomas and Bridget when we are in Ireland in two weeks.  Our best guess is that they are buried in one of the two RC Parish Glangevlin cemeteries, but there may be other cemeteries near Derrylahan, Derrynananta or Drumhurrin where Catholics were buried. Any direction anyone can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

  • Mike and Kate,

Here is a 1911 census record showing a Bridget McGovern aged 47 living at Clarbally. This Bridget would have been 90 in 1954 and I think she is the one you have the death record for and not Bridget Cullen. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Templeport/Clarb…

I have a doubt about the death record you have for Thomas also because there is a Thomas McGovern in  Derrynananta as well as Derrylahan in 1911.

I'm not 100% sure about the above but I think it would be worth your while checking the records you have.

On the 1911 census record you have for Thomas and Bridget - click on the Enumerator's abstract and you will see what parish they lived in and you may be able to find contact details there.

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks so very much for getting back to me so quickly.  I am going with the assumption at this time that I do not know the year of death for either Thomas McGovern (born circa 1850 in Townland Derrylahan, Civil Parish Templeport) and his wife Bridget Cullen (born circa 1855 in Townland Drumhurrin, Civil Parish Templeport).  They resided in Derrylahan in both 1901 and 1911.  Family from the U.S. went to Bridget McGovern's funeral sometime in the 1940s or 1950s.  Unfortunately, I am unable to find a definitive Civil Death Record for either Thomas or Bridget McGovern matching Townland Derrylahan.

I suspected that they are buried in either Blacklion Cemetery or St. Patrick's Cemetery in Glangevlin, but have not been able to find a record of their burial in either cemetery from the online sources I have viewed.  Any suggestions as to cemeteries where residents from Townland Derrylahan and/or Townland Drumhurrin would be buried in the mid 1900s would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mike,

if you look at the attached and the census record I referred to indications are that the family lived in Templeport parish. http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/town_new2.php?MODE=search&TOWNLAND=Derr…

So if I was looking for burial records I would contact the parish for local knowledge/records - https://www.corloughtempleport.com/
