Hi there, hit a brick wall and looking for any assistance in locating Timothy Callaghan of Glenduff.  Timothy came to Australia in 1880 and employment records I have show his DOB as August 1860.  Before he came to Australia he was living in Glenduff and on his marriage certificate his father's name is also Timothy but I have not been able to find any church record of his birth.  I have found a Michael Callaghan living in Glenduff/Coolnanoglaph with his wife Ellen and their son Lawrence and possibly another son Patrick but no record of Timothy and his family.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

There are five Glenduff townlands across Ireland. Can you let us know the county. Thanks!

  • Amanda,

Is the county Limerick? I see a Glenduff and neighboring town land Coolnanoglaph there. Is that a census record you mentioned for the Michael Callaghan family? Which year?

  • Hi there, thanks for your replies, yes it is Glenduff in Limerick. Michael Callaghan died in Glenduff in 1875 and his son Lawrence was living in Coolnanoglaph as per the 1901 census.

  • Amanda,

There are no Griffith's Valuation (1847-1864) records of any Callaghans in Glenduff...doesn't necessarily mean they didn't live there. The Michael and Laurence O'Callaghans of Coolnanoglaph are a few generations above Timothy....do you know if they are related? I looked on Ancestry to find a family tree with the marriage record you spoke of, but did not find any trees. Glenduff is in the RC parish of Templeglantine, and their birth records begin in 1864, that is probably why you cannot find Timothy's birth record.

  • Hi Carolyn,

Michael Callaghan is listed in Coolnanoglaph in the Griffiths Valuations in 1855. I thought Timothy maybe his grandson. Timothy was an assisted immigrant to South Australia in 1881 and his passage wad paid by his cousin already in SA. On the application form in 1880 for Timothy to come out his address is listed as Glenduff, Drumcollogher, Limerick so there must be some connection to Michael and Lawrence Callaghan.
