My last name is Maloy. Rumor has it, that my great great  grandfather came to the US and changed his last name to Maloy from McLoy. My sister says we are possibly from western Ireland. Could anyone help me with this?

  • Smaloy:

Possibly the surname was Molloy in Ireland. In any event, I would suggest that you take a general DNA test. In addition to an ethnicity breakdown, you may be pointed to a more specific area in Ireland. Also, you will have matches and some may be on the Maloy/McLoy line which may provide leads. Have you worked back from your parents to this gr gr grandfather and determined when he came over, who he married and when he died? Maybe a death record would show his parents names.

  • Can you provide more details? First name? Approx birth year? Year of emigration? Wife's name? Children's names? Year of death?  Anything you can give us will help.
