Hi There,

Just looking to possibly find out about my great-great-great grandfather who was from Ireland. His name was John Stewart (I know it doesn't get much more generic than that), he was born in 1815 in Ireland and immigrated to Canada some time before 1851 and settled in Ontario, Canada. His family later moved to Minnesota, USA and then to Alberta, Canada. If anyone has any information, it's kind of a long shot but I'd love to find out more!

Thanks!

  • Hi,

The name could not be more common then it is, it is going to be a long search but you do have a birth year and that is a good start.

Many Stewarts came from the Northern counties of Ireland now Northern Ireland but this does not mean they did not spread trough the rest of Ireland, it does indicate Scottish ancestry though.

My advise for now would be to get as much information from Canada about him like a death cert, marriage cert etc as this might reveal some very useful information like parents name and place of birth.

You can also try www.rootsireland.ie but take note that civil registration in Ireland did not take place till 1864, before this date we are very much depending on church records and depending were your John was from might be recorded in some town places the records go back to 1800 some earler and some later.

Let us know how you get on and we are here to assist

    Annemarie
