I am trying to identify the birthplace of my grandfather Lt Col Roland Harris Graham.

According to Burke's Irish Family Records:

Born 10 Jan 1898

Lt Col RAMC served on NW Frontier and in World Wars 1 and 2

Educ. Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge Univ.

Father of Sonia Elizabeth, Baroness Melchett.

Son of Christopher Graham (b. 1851) and Rachel Moore (of Bernadown, Co. Wexford)

(I need to know where he was born to get copy of his birth certificate).

Thanks for any help!

  • Sebastian:

Below is the 1901 census record for your family. Roland Harris was 8 which would mean that he was born in either 1892 or early 1893. However, according to the census form he was born in England.

  • Looking at the UK census records it is indeed likely Roland was born in England

The family lived at Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, England in 1881

In 1891  :  139 Chesterton Road, St Lukes, Cambridge

And by 1901 they had moved to this Dublin address 10 Wellington Lane, Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland

    His birth :

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915

    Name: Roland Harris Graham
    Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1892
    Registration District: Chesterton
    Inferred County: Cambridgeshire

    hope this helps,

  • Thanks very much indeed for your helpful replies.

It makes sense that he was born in Cambridge as his father was a Fellow there. Everything is now clear! Interesting why his father returned from academic job in Cambride to what sounds like humdrum administrative job in Dublin. ("Assist Inspector of Reformation and Industrial Standards.")

I looked at Wellington Lane in Ballsbridge, Dublin on Google Maps . It seems to be composed of tiny little houses, although the area itself in Dublin 4 is very beautiful with Georgian architecture. Not sure how they all squeezed in there - family of ten plus maid.
