I took a look at some federal censuses showing Thomas B. Brown and his birth year varies from 1860s to early 1870s.  Irish people at the time did not celebrate birthdays, many did not know when they were born, they were not asked for ID like we are today.  Regarding Thomas's headstone, the info engraved there is only as accurate as the person who provided it and the stonemason who inscribed it.  So it's a good idea to keep an open mind about Thomas's birth year.  Good luck.

The 1900 federal census gives Thomas's birth date as JAN. 1865....
