Hi
I am researching an ancestor of mine called Biddy Jones. She was taken from the Tulla Orphanage in 1851 and was sent to Tasmania on board the MS Calcutta where she later married a pardoned convict called Charles Greenlan and had several children. According to the records she was 18 by the time she arrived in Tasmania. Unfortunately neither the Calcutta manifest nor the Immigration records show who her parents were and as far as I know the Tulla Workhouse records were destroyed by fire in 1922. Does anybody have any ideas about how I find out who her family were please?
Many thanks
Heather

Hello Heather,
The Tulla, Clare Catholic Parish registers were not destroyed in the 1922 Four Courts fire in Dublin during the Irish Civil War. The National Library of Ireland website shows Tulla, Clare baptisms and marriages that go back to 1819: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0813
A search at the Find My Past (FMP) website shows three children named Bridget Jones were baptized in the Tullas Catholic Parish. The earliest was Bridget Jones, daughter of John Jones and Honora Halloran. Bridget was baptized on 27 July 1828.
Next, a “Bridg” Jones was baptized in the Tulla Parish on 30 July 1829. Her parents were Martin Jones and Bridg Cunningham.
The third shows that Bridgt Jones was baptized on 24 January 1830. Her parents were Thomas Jones and Nancy McMahon.
One of these children may be the Biddy Jones you are referring to, but you would have to find a record in Australia that tells you who her parents were and see if those parents match the names of the parents in one of the three Tulla baptism records as noted above.
Don’t hesitate to write with any questions,
Dave Boylan

Hello again Heather,
As a follow-up to the above information, see if the marriage record for Biddy Jones and Charles Greenlan tells you who her parents were. Tasmanian vital records are held at the Tasmanian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Go to the following for more details: https://guides.slsa.sa.gov.au/bdm/TASbdm

If you would email me directly at: tulla@irelandxo.com, I will be able to assist you.
I look forward to hearing.
All the best,
Jane
