Edward Tyrrell and his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Scully, had three children baptized at St. Joseph in Ballinagar: Richard (my great grandfather) in March 1845, Anne in Oct 1846 and Thomas in September 1848. The family arrived in New York in April of 1849 aboard the "Arkansas" from Dublin.
There is a Richard Tyrrell listed in the Tithe Applotments (late 1820s or early 1830s) living in Toberlaheen, the townland next to Ballinagar who may be Edward's father. I would be interested in connecting with any Tyrrell or Scully descendants who might be related to this family with the hope of learning more about Edward and Elizabeth. There were lots more Scullys in this area of Geashill than there were Tyrrells.
After emigrating, Edward and his family lived in Oneida Co., New York until about 1855-56. Three more daughters were born in New York and Thomas died there before 1855. The family then moved west to Madison, Wisconsin. Edward is last listed in census records in 1860. In 1862, Richard, who was just 17 or 18, purchased a farm in Dane Twp. north of Madison where he and his mother and sisters were living in 1870, so it is assumed that Edward died before 1862. Richard married and lived on the same farm until 1895 when he sold it and took his family to join two of his sisters who were living with their families in Grafton, North Dakota. Elizabeth (Scully) Tyrrell/Terrill was living with her son and his family in Wisconsin in 1880, but died in North Dakota in 1890 while living with her daughter Ellen.
The surname has morphed to Terrill in the US.

Hello,
there are 37 Scully's (mostly around Birr & Tullamore) and 8 Tyrrell's living (all around Edenderry) in County Offaly today according to the residential telephone directory here: http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/q/name/where/County%20Offaly/who/tyrrell/?customerType=RESIDENTIAL&contentErrorLinkEnabled=true
The Irish Times link here gives you a good view of the surrounding parishes to Geashill and you will find Scully's in e.g. Lynally

Here is a list of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland - Geashill, County Offaly showing Scully's in a number of townlands:

My suggestion would be that you contact the Offaly genealogy centre first to see if there are any records - it is a chargeable service but they offer a first search for just ?10 so it is very worthwhile taking advantage of this - there there is a form on the website to complete. Let's hope something turns up and then the local parish volunteers can take it from there.
Please let them know we sent you!

Hi Dolores,
Thank you for your response. I have already used the services of Irish Midlands Ancestry. That's how I know that Richard Tyrrell and his siblings were baptized at St. Joseph at Ballinagar. I first found Richard's record at rootsireland.com and then contacted IMA to see what they could tell me. They verified that there were two more records for Richard's siblings so I paid an additional amount for a full report. They sent me a copy of the church register index pages for Tyrrells and Scullys in Killeigh Parish. The code letters next to the index pages revealed which of the three churches in Killeigh parish they were baptized in and the very detailed townland map they provided showed the church in Ballinagar in relation to the surrounding townlands. From there I searched the tithe applotments and found a Tyrrell in Toberlaheen and several Scullys in "Knock" which is apparently a specific area in Knockballyboy. These sites are both quite close to the church in Ballinagar
What I would really like to know is the full text of the baptismal records including the sponsors as that might offer some clues to the parents or siblings of Edward Tyrrell and Elizabeth Scully. Irish Midlands Ancestry could not provide that information and when I tried contacting the parish by email, I got no response.
I know that the baptismal records are on microfilm at the National Library and theoretically the originals should be in the custody of the parish. What is the best way to access these records? Contact a researcher to go to the National Library? Or write a letter to the parish? Now I know the page numbers for each record and which register they are in, information I did not have when I first emailed the parish some time ago.
Any assistance regarding the best way to find the full content of these three baptismal records at St. Joseph, Ballingar between 1845 and 1848 would be most appreciated.
Thanks again and best regards,
