My Irish ancestors all appeared in the Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire areas of Scotland in the early/mid-1800s.  All their recorded data (banns, marriages and deaths) are from old parish records in the Church of Scotland.

Their Protestantism is why I am starting my search in the Ulster area.

Death Certificate:    Thomas Peffer died 15 October 1885 in Cadder:  iron miner in Scotland, born in Ireland 1833 to William Peffer (blacksmith, deceased) and Deborah McGee (deceased); son James peffer, wife Agnes Rae

Thomas and Agnes published banns in the Kilbarchan parish 1850, so they left Ireland before then.

Death Certificate:     Agnes Rae died 18 July 1891 in Cadder:  born 1833 in Ireland to Joseph Rae (deceased) and Agnes Matson(deceased)

in the 1891 Scotland census, Agnes is listed as "pauper, former miner's wife" and is living alone.

Thomas and Agnes's children (names and dates gathered from the 1861 and 1871 Scotland censuses):  William, John, Isabella (my 2nd great grandmother), thomas, Joseph, James, Edward, Samuel and Agnes from 1852-1867.

Can anyone help me locate which Irish county these folks came from?

  • Your best parish search for a family of this name would be parishes in Louth and Meath not Ulster.

Peppard variant Pepper, Peffer etc were a Norman family who came into Ireland 1170.  Their patrimony is predominantly  the Ardee area of Louth and Stamullen and Julianstown Meath (where McMullen families leased from them). Being protestant does not=Ulster, as a quick read of the Catholic Convert roles would verify.  Within them you will find every Irish surname including those of Norman extraction.  These families converted during reformation to keep their assets, usually episcopalian or what is called the established church COI.  Records exist in Griffiths Valuations for these families, with Thomas a forename most common right from the arrival 900 years ago.
