Hello,

I first visited Ireland in 1996 for St. Patrick's Day for work, but didn't know I had Irish ancestry. After 23 years, I'm finally getting back to Ireland and want to see if I can find more information on my ancestors from County Monaghan, specifically the Pollocks and Johnstons from Aghnamullen Parish; Millers from Ballybay; and Adams from Drumgoon, County Cavan.

Planning to be up that way in late June, early July. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Alan

  • Hello Miriam and Jane,

So glad to see your messages. Here is the information I have on my ancestors:

John Pollock died in 1814.  He married Elizabeth Pollock. Elizabeth was born in 1746 and died in 1841 (she may be buried in Albany, NY).

Children of John Pollock and Elizabeth Pollock:
4x great-grand: John P Pollock was born on Jan. 17, 1797 in Aghnamullen, Co. Monaghan, Ireland and died on Feb. 10, 1853 in New York, NY.  He married Mary Culbraith Pollock [Johnston] on Aug. 8, 1815 in Aghnamullen, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Mary Culbraith, parents unknown, was born on Apr. 19, 1800 in Aghnamullen, Co. Monaghan, Ireland and died on Nov. 18, 1865 in Hoboken, NJ.

John and Mary left Belfast in 1823 for Quebec, Canada then settled in Albany, NY for a few years before moving down to New York City. They are both buried in the family plot in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. I've been to visit them many times).

    Adams from Drumgoon, Co. Cavan

  • Dear Alan:

I have been in contact with a librarian who has a very good knowledge of the local history in the Monaghan area and who will be happy to assist you.  She has asked that I share her email address so that you can contact her prior to travel.

Do you have any connection to this Pollock family -

Marriage - 5thAug1875 Charles Pollock son of Michael Pollock of Gortakeeghan, Monaghan Parish married Sarah Jane Rusk dau of David Rusk of Stranoodan, Kilmore Parish - witnessed b y William Pollock & Liza Jane Porter - Rev Alex Kenny.   Sarah Jane died 1886 and Charles re-married to Sarah Jane McDowell who died in 1917. He was the informant on her death certificate, however, I cannot find his death. They were living in Feragh.

    Thanks

  • Hello Jan,

Being my branch of the Pollocks and Michael Pollock is from Co. Monaghan, there a possibility that there could be a relation since all Pollocks are from the same branch originating near Glasgow, Scotland. Unfortunately, I do not have any other information on my branch other than what's posted above since they all emigrated from Ireland between 1823 and 1830s, well before records were kept. Though I keep trying to find out more information.
