Hi,
I am heading to Ireland in October (hopefully Covid doesn’t change it for the 2nd time). I’d love to go see where my great grandfather Patrick Hurley was from. I have found lots of information but, not being from Ireland, I want to make sure I’m correct. My great grandfather came from Corran, County Cork, Ireland. His parents lived at a house 7 in Corran (Dunderrow, Cork) in 1901. One of his sisters was married in Corran, The Mountain, Ballinhassig, County Cork. I feel like there are lots of different place names in some of the records I’ve found. I’ve also found Ballygarvan. Would anyone in Ireland know where house 7 in Corran (Dunderrow, Cork) would be? I’d also like to see if I could find out where his parents were buried. What cemeteries are around there? His father, Michael Hurley died in Corran in 1902 and his mother Mary (Walsh) Hurley died in 1911. I also found a record for his brother Bartholomew, and he lived at house 5 in Corran, Dunderrow, Cork) in 1911. Does anyone know if Corran is a big town, little town, village, or don’t blink kind of town? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Take care,
Debbie

Hi Deborah,
House number in 1901 could be the same house as number 5 in 1911. Ireland didn't use house numbers, the people were known by their names.
In both Census there were only 15 houses in that area.
When you looked at the census and clicked on the name to see the census return, look down to the house and building return form, you see a list of the type of dwelling.
There were only houses in that area. This link is the map. when you open it look at the right of the page you will see a map saying road, point to it and choose Ariel..... zoom in and you will see the name Corran, you will see how many houses there are.
corran, Dunderrow county cork - BingCorran is a townland, an area, when you drive along the roads, townland names show on the SatNav, they pass by quick!
If you are in the USA the townland is about as big as a block, or the width of a large building.
You mentioned Ballygarvan, this it on this map.......it's near the airport. Look to the left of Ballygavan and you will see Ballinhassig
Ballygarvan - BingGraveyards........ I checked in "Find a Grave" the names are in there if relatives upload them.
Have a look and put Hurley County Cork (there are 28 pages)I hope this helps.

Thank you Margot and Alice for the information.
Margot - Your description of Corran gave me a good idea of what the size of the area is. I'll also follow up on your suggestions with the census' and the ariel view.
Alice - I will definitely try to contact you. My sisters and I are going on a tour of Ireland so I'm not sure how tight the schedule will be but I am going to try to make it work.
I appreciate the information from both of you. It gives me a better idea of what I'm looking for. I went to Canada to follow up on some other great grandparents and we drove through
the town and only saw a church. We found information about them in a small museum down the road that had records about the farmers in the area. I didn't expect that. So, having an idea helps out a
lot.
Thanks again.
Take care,
Debbie
