I plan to be in Mayo approximately September 19-21. I would love to meet with someone to see if there is any hope in tracing my family. My email is below.

  • Barbara:

Can you share with us what information you have names and dates and we will see if there are any records available which will identify what part of Mayo your family was from? Have you tested your DNA?

    5. Sarah Agnes - my gr grandmother b. 1853? 1858? D 18 Apr 1936 Philadelphia, married William James Lester Born 1853 County Armagh, mar Oct. 1882 in Philadelphia, no immigration on her but she was a sponser to one of John Henry's daughters in 1877 in Philadelphia,

If accurate, Baptism Date: 14 Feb 1853, Baptism Place: Mayo, Castlebar, Ireland, Diocese:Tuam, one sponsor is Martin Walsh (brother), lists them living in Drimneen?

Sarah's son, Robert, was my grandfather, but sadly he died in 1918, at the age of 30 from the Spanish flu.  My father was only 2 and my grandmother later remarried.  Because of this, we had little to no information on the family.  The information I have gathered on the family has birth and immigration records that vary wildly.

Patrick J? Welsh b 1848? Ireland possibly another child of Richard and Mary or a nephew?

1870 census, carpenter, lived with Hannah Welsh Graham

1870-1873 lived with John Henry Welsh, 144 Haines St.

    1879-81 226 Haines St.

    1892, 94,95 118 Centre St

I have not been able to verify any immigration on the above.

I have done DNA on Ancestry and 23 and me.  Both indicated the family was from southern Mayo.  DNA match is to

    1. Maurice Walsh 1790?-1860 b County Mayo, married Margaret Murray ,1815-1860, found a Maurice Walsh, blacksmith listed in Ballina in 1846. Ardnaree?

    2.son Michael, b. 1830 Hollymount, died 9 Nov 1879 Ireland mar. Kate Hollan?, d. 1856

    3. son James b 1855 Swinford, d. 1915 Ireland, mar. Margaret Gerachty

    4. Michael Joseph b. 1 July 1876 Ballinrobe, emigrated to New York City in th 1890's, married Delia Quinn

Is it possible that Maurice was a brother to my Richard?

I hope this is not too overwhelming. Please let me know how I could meet with someone in the Southern Mayo Genealogy office.

  • Barbara:

Here is a link to the South Mayo Family Research Centre. I would contact them via e-mail.

    https://www.rootsireland.ie/mayo-south-family-research-centre/

I looked at Roots ireland records and found the 1853 record for Sarah that you cited with father Richard Walsh and mother Mary Walsh. There were a number of other children for this couple: Hanoria 1842 (is this Hannah?) Michael 1843 Ellen 1844 Patrick 1847 John 1850 another Patrick 1851 Mary 1855. Some of these children may have died young.
