Hello, I would love some extra eyes on a family that I have been researching for some time now.
James Wallace & Matilda Caldwell had several children, most likely in Co. Tyrone, from ~1820-1840. The family left for America by 1847. I am reasonably sure Matilda was part of a Caldwell line from Maghernageeragh, though I have no information about the Wallace branch. If I had to guess based on DNA matching, they would have lived right on the Tyrone/Donegal border between Killeter and Strabane.
- Andrew Wallace ~1825
- Elizabeth Wallace ~1827
- Alexander Wallace ~1829
- Samuel Wallace ~1832
- Caldwell Wallace ~1835
- Matilda Wallace ~1836
- Joseph Wallace ~1839
I believe the family was Presbyterian. I already had a search done by PRONI for baptisms in the Urney parish books with no luck. It looks like any remaining Presbyterian records in the area may just cover the baptisms of the last 2-3 children if I'm lucky. Any help is appreciated.

The nearest Presbyterian church to Magheranageeragh looks to be Killeter which is in the same townland, so perhaps that’s the church the families attended? If so, the bad news is they have no baptism or marriage records earlier than 1839. However the birth of Joseph - if it was in 1839 or later – might scrape in.
Copy of the Killeter records is in PRONI.

Thanks for your reply. I think Killeter (MIC1P/252) and Castlederg (MIC1P/73) will be the next on my list of parishes to have searched. There are a few more in the area with records that I could get lucky with. At this point casting a net might be the only way to learn more.

There were certainly several Caldwell families farming in Magherangeeragh in the tithes. No Wallaces though in the parish.

The Caldwells look to have lived in the townland since the 1600s. By way of example, here’s a lease in PRONI dated 21.10.1678 (D2281/1).
"Edward Edwards of Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, to William Caldwell of Maghernageeragh, Co. Tyrone. A lease of 3 lives renewable for ever at the yearly rent of £5 10. 0. with 1½ barrels of good oats and one fat unshorn mutton and 3 days work of man and horse. Maghernageeragh and Thainboy, [sic] Co. Tyrone". It's probably worth checking that lease to see who the 3 lives were. You may get a snapshot of who was in the family at that early date.
D2281/3 is a will for Charles Caldwell of Maghernageeragh dated 10 Oct 1747.
PRONI have about 15 items for the family. Search their e-catalogue under Maghernageeragh & Caldwell.

Thank you very much, I appreciate all the Caldwell information you've sent. This isn't the first time the Caldwell family of Maghernageeragh has appeared on this forum, however right now I can only use some (distant) DNA evidence to link Matilda to this family. Though we do have multiple independent matches that triangulate. I expect the primary sources to absolutely confirm such relationships likely do not exist at this point.
