I am interested in Wallace families in the Ballynarrig (Ballydarrog) and Moys area near Limavady in the first half of the 1800s.  My grandmother's ancestors, Hugh Wallace and Ann nee Smith left the area for Australia late in 1838.  Hugh's parents were a William and Jean Wallace and he had siblings in the area who remained in Ireland.  So I am interested in all Wallace families in the area at that time and subsequent years.

  • Hi thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

Have you tried looking the family up in the Tithes Applotment Books? These are a set of land records pertaining to Ireland from 1823 to 1838. YOu can find them here:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

You could also perhaps try looking at any Church records that are available. If the family were Roman Catholic you can use the Irishtimes website to see what records are available for the parish of Limavady. You can see this at the following link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Derry&parish=Limavady&churchid=363

If the family followed the Church of Ireland, you can check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

Have you checked the immigration records in Australia? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in the Colonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a wide variety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants on board ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more.

Other websites which you may find useful are the National Archives of Ireland and the National Library of Ireland. These can be found at http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/ and http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx respectively.

Also check the UK National Archives at : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/ and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland at  http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope this helps with your search. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Ken,

I am connected to these Wallaces through DNA and am happy to share what I know - I realise this is a long shot as you posted 10 years ago but hopefully you see this.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Stephen,

I'm two years later than your post, but would love to chat to you about Hugh and Ann. They are my 5th great grandparents and I'm keen to learn more about them.

    Thanks so much
