I am a great great grandaughter of Matthew & Catherine WALSHE (nee O'CONNOR) who lived in Philipstown in the mid 1800's.

Two of their sons, James & Thomas, migrated to Australia in the late 1860's, establishing themselves in the Albury area on the New South Wales & Victorian border. Thomas is my great grandfather.

My husband & I will be touring around Irealnd  in the summer & staying at Annaharvey Farm near Tullamore 4th, 5th & 6th August.

I have beenr esearching my family history, so I am looking forward to exploring th places where my family lived, joining in some of the events for the Gathering, and I would love to meet other descendants of Matt & Kate who still live in the area.

  • Hi Margaret and Peter,

Thank you very much for your message.

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there was any family still in the area at the time? You can search these online here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Also, you could try looking in civil records to see if you can find any information on the family that remained in Ireland. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

You could also try contacting Irish Midlands Ancestry for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: info@offalyhistory.com

I am delighted to hear that you will be visiting in the summer and I hope that you have a lovely time while you are over here!We have recently added a new link to the top of our website for people who are planning on visiting in 2013. It takes you to a short web form. We would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete this. Thank you!

Finally, I will also pass this message onto one of our volunteers in the Offaly area who hopefully may be able to offer some more assistance or know of someone who may be able to help you.

    Kind regards,

  • Walsh(e) would still be a common name in the Daingean/Philipstown area.   Would you have a townland or any other information to narrow the search.  I've tried looking for the name on the familysearch.org website and also the 1901 census but no real luck. It would be great to narrow it down if possible.  At least then I could try to find the existing relations.
I'm not sure if you know but the Daingean Homecoming Festival will be on the time you are travelling over.....it might be an ideal time to meet your cousins.  See www.thedaingeanfestival.com for full details of events.   It's on from Thursday 1st August to Monday 5th August.   regardsCatherine Kenna

  • Hi Catherine,

My great grandmother, Anne Walshe married Michael Geraghty in Rathangan Church, Co. Kildare in 1881. According to the marriage certificate, her father's name was Matthew. I found a birth for Anne Walshe - parents Matthew Walshe & Catherine Connor - birth place Daingean, Co. Offaly. I'm not sure whether this is my Anne Walshe.

My Anne was living in Coolelan, Rathangan, Co. Kildare at the time of marriage and lived in James's Street, Newbridge, Co. Kildare for the rest of her life. She named her only daughter "Catherine" Geraghty.

According to Griffiths Valuation, a Matthew Walshe was living in Coolelan, Rathangan.

Summary, I don't know whether your Walshes moved to Coolelan, Rathangan, Co. Kildare.

    Regards,Veronica
