Looking for info of the Webster family from Garrybritt, Wexford County, Leinster Province, Ireland... William Webster married Jane Rath and came to Lansdowne, Leeds County, Ontario, Canada in 1822. Three Webster names I am looking for are Robert, John, and Nathaniel. These 3 all took part in the rebellion of 1798. Robert (father of 19 children) was piked and thrown over the Enniscorthy bridge into the Slaney River. Nathaniel Webster (a son of Robert who was spiked) inherited the family homestead in Garrybritt. Nathaniel & his wife both died at the age of 99 yrs. on the same day .

  • My Webster dna matches on Ancestry have many references to the Webster's of Enniscorthy including the names you mention. Back as far as Israel Webster who came to Wexford from Leicestershire, according to my match's tree. I see that they were Quakers. Then there are the matches in Leeds, Ontario. My ancestor is Edward Shirley Webster, son of Henry Webster.  He is my great, great grandfather. There are many discrepancies about his birth and age. On marriage certificate in 1839 to Betsey Allen in Aston, Birmingham, he stated that his father, Henry Webster was a Captain in the Madras Cavalry. On his 1851 census he stated he was born in India. On his second marriage certificate he stated that he was born in Dublin, Ireland and his father was Henry "Gentleman". I would think he wouldn't lose his military name, with "retired" added. His daughter, Matilda Margaret Webster is my great grandmother, arriving in Melbourne, Australia in 1869 aboard the Norfolk. Edward Shirley Webster was described as a Linen Draper in 1839 and that business sent him bankrupt. He later became a button manufacturer. Census and marriage birth years vary from 1811 to 1818.

Edward Shirley Webster seemingly had ties to Lancashire. His daughter, Julia Shirley Webster was born in Chorlton and he spent census night 1851 in Makerfield and was in Lancashire business directories. DNA matches refer to Lancashire but not so much to the name Webster. Often the names Wild, Howard, Counsel, Ward. I wonder if his mother's surname was Shirley. I see on family trees that there is much guesswork abut him and that it is copied from one to another without proof. Although it is clear he is blood related to Webster's I cannot find any trace of his birth. His name does not show on records until his marriage in 1839. I cannot find any mention of him on available Indian records or of his father, Henry. His first daughter was Agness Elizabeth (the Elizabeth after her mother), Matilda Margaret (the Matilda could be after her mother's sister who died young) and Julia Shirley. Agness could have been his mother's name. Agness and Margaret suggest a Scottish link.

I think I am asking too much but possibly someone knows something about this mysterious relative of mine. If I could trace him, I may then be able to know more about the Wexford Websters.

  • Hello,

I was given part of a book that you will like. It is THE EARLY WEBSTER FAMILY IN IRELAND.

I will happily photocopy it for you, but I don’t know if this message board is the place to post it for you.
