Hello, I've taken care of the headstones or cenotaphs for my Dungarvan born family members listed below. I know they are from Dungarvan and used to hear Ring for some of them. I'd love to know something about their Irish lives. I THINK...that someone in the Welch line had something to do with The Workhouse during the years of hunger...but, can't be sure of that story. Any information would be appreciated SO MUCH....thank you for your kindliness.
Dungarvan native - Thomas Roach, age 60 is first seen in the 1860 US Census of Newburyport, MA; Where is is living with his daughter, son-in-law and their three children.
Dungarvan natives - Robert Hamilton (B circa 1825) and Thomas' daughter Mary R Hamilton (B circa 1827)...along with their 3 children. Robert and Mary are first seen in The 1855 Massachusetts Census.
Mary's surname spelling is also seen as Roche.
Three other Dungarvan, Ireland born relatives of Robert Hamilton were his brother-in-laws John Roach and James Roach...and his Dungarvan born cousin Michael Welch....all
"Went down to bottom of the Sea" in 1862...during America's worst Mariner loss as of The Great Gale of Feb. 24/25, 1862. The details are contained in the book: "

Nothing is known of Thomas Roach's Darling Bride - Catherine Cooney Roche. She is not burried in St. Manry's Cemetary, Newburyport, MA. All others listed above are in the O'Connell, Roach, Hamilton
burial plots and/or cenotaphs.

Dungarvan natives -
Patrick Connell (or O'Connell) born circa 1799 and his bride Margaret (Welch) O'Connell were my first known relatives from Ireland. Patrick is buried in St. Mary's Cemetary outside of Newburyport, MA as Irish were not allowed to be
buried in the town back then.
Michael, their son, was born in Dungarvan circa 1820. I was told years ago by a kindly person from Dungarvan, Eddie Cantwell that he felt
that the surname was Connell....I dismissed that information but found out that indeed Mr. Cantwell was correct....that my GGrandparents surname was Connell in Ireland, but, changed back to O'Connell in Newburyport, MA District Court. His bride was Johanna Welch Born Circa 1818 from Dungarvan.
Michael J. Connell, Jr. was born in Dungarvan on June, 12, 1855. He arrived in the United States To Boston, MA on April 1, 1866. (Dates are approximate. He married Johannah Welch whose parents immigrated to Newburyport from Dungarvan.
Michael's siblings were Julia and Patrick born in Dungarvan.

Dear Mark O:
Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.
Firstly, you have some really wonderful information in your query that would make some great Ancestor profiles under our XO Chronicles feature--particularly the Michael Welch ancestor and the poem associated with him. The link to the Chronicles is below for your reference:
https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy
Secondly, here is some information for some of your ancestors from the Roots Ireland website:
I found a marriage record in the Catholic parish of Ring for Robert Hamilton and Mary Roache of 4 September 1853. Robert's address is Ballynagaul. Witnesses to their marriage were: Willliam Whelan and Mary Whealan. This record is available as a transcribed record on the Roots Ireland website and it is also available for free on the National Library of Ireland Catholic Parish. Registers. Notes on this record stated that the Officiant was J. Hickey and the place of the marriage was Ring and Old parish.

I did not find a baptism record for any children.
As to Welch family members born in Dungarvan, the Roots Ireland website has a large number of baptisms and you might find it worthwhile taking out a short subscription to view them. Their website address is:
You also mentioned Eddie Cantwell and he is someone associated with the Waterford County Museum in Dungarvan, who is extremely helpful to Ireland XO with genealogy queries. You can reach him directly at the following email address:
Please come back to us via this thread if you need further information.
The very best of luck with your research. You can contact me directly if you have specific questions about the above:
Kind regards,
Jane.

Hello Jane,
...as we say in Boston, "Wicked Exciting" to read your response to my posting. Grand to get some "Irish"
details about one of my Hamilton - Roach ancestors. I will be visiting Ballynagaul (which is a new
town to me) and the information on Ring and Old parish will be further investigated.....before I bring my
darling wife to what is also her family's ancestrial Waterford during the McGrath Clan Reunion in June
of next year.
I will List the information on Dungarvan Natives: Robert Hamiton, his brother-in-Laws James and John Roach,
and Robert's cousin Michael Welch....all involved in what was at that time, America's greatest loss of
Mariner life being February 24/25, 1862.
Again, I truly appreciate your efforts in this matter and, your kindliness. I've shared your information
with other family members and, they thank you as well.
Regards,
Mark O'Connell
