My ancestors settled in West Springfield, MA in 1860.  I would like to hear from ANYONE whose ancestors settled in WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA.  There were MANY individuals, from Ireland residing in West Springfield at that time.  These families resided next door to or close to one another.  West Springfield was not a metropolitan city, it was a small town.  Therefore, I believe that all of these immigrants were either distantly related to one another OR were from the same town or area in Ireland.

My ancestors were: Shea - Lynch - Holland - Cronin

Thank you,

Carolyn

  • My husband's relatives also came to Springfield, Massechusetts in April of 1850. Jeremiah McCarty was a widower with a 3 year old daughter who met a widow on the ship and married her in April 30, 1850. They then moved to Illinois, (we only know this because 2 children were born there) and finally settled in Erin Prairie, Wisconsin. We have no information on them as Jeremiah McCarty, his brother Johnny, and his two sisters Hannah and Ellen could not read or write. Only one sister, Ann could read and write. (I got this off the 1870 census.) Any information I have on them came from a nun who wrote down what she could remember and I have found what I could from the census of 1860, 1870, and 1880. We don't know where they came from in Ireland although speculation is County Cork. I too believe that they must have known people who came from the same area. I have not been able to find them on any ships passenger lists.

  • Hi Bev McCarty, are you still folllowing this?  I'm wondering if there's a link between you and my Irish ancestors?  I have an Ellen McCarty married to Christopher Nugent?

  • I don't think my Ellen is yours. My Ellen McCarty married a widower Richard Coughlin in October of 1851 in Kane, Illinois.
