I'm researching the Noone family from Currameeagh.

There were two Noone families living there at the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses - my great grandfather Luke Noone in both censuses, and another Luke in 1901 and his son Thomas in 1911 (this Luke died in 1906). I'm sure the two families were related somehow, but I have not yet been able to make the link.

In any case, in reviewing court records on Ancestry.com, the above named Thomas was in court on numerous occasions in 1908, along with many other individuals, for charges of "Unlawful assembly to disturb the public peace. Defendants did on"...(various dates)..."at Kilkerrin in said county unlawfully assmble with others to the number of 3 or more with intent unlawfully to disturb the public peace and while so assembled were guilty of conduct calculated to lead to a breach of the peace by shouting, booing, and groaning(?) Mr. H D'arcy, his wife and daughters..."

Other listed defendents were from Cuilsallagh (?), Derroughs, Curraghmore, Derrinabrin, and Curraghleenagh (sp?).

I know that the D'arcy family were the landlords for Currameeagh in the 1850's at the time of Griffith's. Did the D'arcy's still own the land in 1908? Were these widespread rent protests of some sort?

  • Hi,

Yes, Darcy's did own the laand in 1908 and in September 1908 there was some kind of settlement with the landlord  reported in the newspapers. This would indicate that there was unrest leading up to the settlement, which would explain the Petty Session reports.

    Best wishes, Kieran Jordan

  • Thanks!

The Luke Noone that got married in 1872 is the one who died in 1906. His son Thomas is the one who was listed in the court records I found. I'm intensely curious as to why a fairly large group of people would have been "disturbing Mr. D'arcy's peace" on multiple occasions that year.

The Luke Noone who married Bridget Molloy is my great grandfather. My guess is they married in late 1891 or early 1892, as their first daughter was born in October 1892. But there seems to be a gap in the civil marriage registrations from late September 1891 until mid January 1892 (there are no marriages at all registered for the Glenamaddy district in that time frame which I find highly unlikely), and the Kilkerrin/Clonberne church records don't begin until sometime in 1892. Bridget's family was from Clooncon East in the parish of Boyounagh, but those church marriage records I've found online don't extend far enough.

See attached the reopor on the settlement from 1908. The unrest seems to be part of the Land War.

    Best wishes, Kieran
